Potential pet owners of Staffordshire bull terriers have been advised to conduct research into the breed, such as which is the best dry dog food for the breed.
Such is the advice of Natalie Ingham, canine and welfare trainer at the London site of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.
Ms Ingham explained that dog owners should always find out more about the breed they wish to look after as they are all different.
She said: "It is important to consider the dog's needs; staffies require affection, as they enjoy the company of people.
"They can be active and may require mental stimulation to give them constructive outlets for their energy."
As long as people can provide Staffies with a simulating and loving home, they will make fantastic pets, Ms Ingham added.
These sentiments were echoed by former pro-wrestler Hulk Hogan during a trip to the UK last week.
Hogan visited the Dogs home and played with a Staffie called Marcel. He revealed that he urges people to see Staffies for what they are - great dogs that don't deserve the tough fighting image they have.
