Essex mayor makes her pooch her deputy

One pooch from Essex may well be chowing down on some top-quality dog food after being made deputy mayor of Brentwood.

Joan Holmes, mayor of Brentwood, has made her Miniature Schnauzer Abi her deputy, meaning her pooch will go on official visits and trips with her wearing her own mini robes, reports the Daily Mail.

Ms Holmes told the news provider: "She seems to like her mayor's outfit, and it really suits her ... Abi will hopefully be treated the same way in her new role.

"She's very sociable, like me, she loves her food, like me, and when the day is over she likes nothing more than putting her feet up."

However, Ms Holmes joked that unlike Abi, she does not chase after squirrels.

The mayor was first elected as a councillor for Brentwood West in 2004. She is due to retire from her role as mayor next year.
