Dog's dinner: Most pets eat inedible items

Tuesday, 26th March 2013

While all owners know that they should be feeding their canine nothing but the very best dog food, a recent survey has revealed that the majority of pets will eat just about anything they can get their paws on, regardless of whether or not the item is edible.

According to the Herald.ie, around three-quarters of respondents in the survey said their pet had tucked into something they shouldn't, with objects such as slippers, mobile phones and rubber ducks appearing in the list of devoured articles.

Owners should be aware, however, that pets can often do themselves harm by eating things that they can't digest or which contain sharp points, while consuming garden slugs and snails can result in dogs becoming infected with lungworm.

TV vet Luke Gamble has advised all owners to make sure their dog does not eat these common garden creatures, saying: "If you suspect your dog is eating slugs and snails it's really important that you speak to a vet."
