Changing dog food can 'improve breath'

Thursday, 20th January 2011

Pet owners can improve their dog's breath by changing their dog food, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for US-based online pet newspaper www.pawscorner.com claimed that bad breath may be caused by the type of dog food that the animal is consuming.

They told the Payson Roundup: "Diet also may play a role in your dog's breath. Try different types of dog food or add variety to its diet with fresh foods and homemade treats a few times a week."

In order to combat bad breath, dog owners should also invest in a specialist toothbrush and toothpaste to remove plaque and fight decay, they added. Vets will also provide a professional teeth cleaning service.

"Chewing is important to a dog's oral health. Make sure that plenty of chew toys are available, which strengthen the jaw and teeth and also, in some cases, help to keep teeth clean," the spokesperson stated.
