Battersea to mark Remembrance Day with tribute to brave dogs

Friday, 11th November 2011

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home may be preparing some special dog food treats as it is set to hold a special event to remember dogs that served in wars today (November 11).

The charity has provided dogs to the armed forces for its entire history and, as a result, Battersea dogs have played a "vital role" in both world wars.

Howard Bridges, Battersea's deputy chief executive, said: "Servicemen, women and dogs have had a special relationship through times of conflict and Battersea is immensely proud of the outstanding contribution our dogs have made throughout our long history.

"We are delighted that our canine companions are now enriching the lives of our brave war veterans, the Chelsea Pensioners."

He added that its animals continue to play a vital role in war efforts within the armed forces.

Battersea rehomes dogs to service organisations such as the Police and Ministry of Defence that it believes are not suitable for a normal domestic environment.

Remembrance Day is held on November 11th to mark the official end to WW1 in 1918.
