A fat kitty named Pie is currently having his cat food monitored as part of a national competition.

The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) is running a competition to find the UK's best slimming animal, reports the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian.

Pie, from Crewe, is one of 11 finalists that has been selected to take part in Pet Fit Club, an annual competition that involves a six-month diet and exercise programme.

Brenda Sandland, Pie's owner, said: "We've stuck to the programme exactly, but Pie has had a few other ideas.

"We came home from work one day to find out that one of the cats had managed to 'break' into the cat food container - we don't know who for certain but my money is on Pie!"

At the start of the competition, Pie weighed 8.4kg. His ideal weight is 4.5kg.

According to the PDSA, Pie was so big at the start that one time he got stuck under a fence.
