A cat and her two kittens are now being cared for properly after being dumped in a cardboard box outside a factory.
The cats, who have been named Sandal, Flip and Flop, were found by a member of the public who spotted the box outside Inglis Grain Driers Lit in East Lothian.
Inspector Emma Phillips said, "These poor cats were understandably quite frightened after their ordeal. Flip and Flop are now coming round and are really friendly little guys but Sandal is still very timid.
"We don't think they could have been outside the factory for too long as they are all in good condition."
She added that it appears all three animals were well looked after pets until recently and that someone had made the decision to abandon them.
The cats are now recovering in the Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.
Abandoning an animal is a criminal offence and those found guilty of this can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
