A relatively new breed in existence since the 1950s, the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer is elusive, with precious little being known about its early origin. Developed in Czechoslovakia following the Second World War by enthusiast Koloman Slimak, the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer was primarily bred as an all-purpose working dog, capable of tracking, pointing and retrieving over both land and water. The Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer made its way to England in 1997 when it was introduced at Cruft's Show, and is known by a variety of different names, including the Slovak Wire-Haired Pointer, the Slovak Pointing Griffon, and in the original Slovak, the Slovensky Hrubosrsty Stavac. The breed is not recognised by the American Kennel Club.
A distinct breed with a rustic appearance, the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer is a dog of proportioned build, with powerful legs, a deep muzzle, and large pendant ears. The coat is typically coarse or furry, and requires moderate grooming to maintain its appearance and condition. Variations of grey are observed in the coat, and the eyes are usually amber through to lighter shades. Facial furnishings are common on the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer, which are not often trimmed. Able to retrieve from water, the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer is an able and enthusiastic swimmer, aided by its waterproof coat that serves to insulate the breed.
Unpretentious in structure or appearance, the breed is as modest in temperament as it is in presence. A high energy breed, the Pointer requires both regular exercise and mental stimulation in order to discourage destructive behaviours around the home. In order to promote the best from your dog, early socialisation, consistent training and firm leadership is beneficial. When the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer is not being active and playful, it is otherwise cool, calm and collected, happy to relax with its family and display a gentle, mannered and sociable temperament. On average, a healthy Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer will weigh 25-35 kg, with a life expectancy of 9-15 years.
Typically healthy and long-lived, the Slovakian Rough-Haired Pointer is susceptible to certain health afflictions, ranging in severity. Prone to hip dysplasia, a common problem across breeds, as well as eye degeneration and diseases, and arthritis. More threatening breed-specific ailments include skin cancers and tumours.
