We all know that if we want our pet cats to live happy and active lives then we need to ensure that they're being fed a healthy diet that contains all the nutrients they require.

However, what many owners forget is that the way we store our pets' food can affect its freshness and how it tastes. Therefore, as well as considering what we feed our feline friends it is also worth taking the time to learn how it should be taken care of.

Dry cat food is slightly simpler, as it doesn't go off as easily. However, if a bag of dry food is left open it can quickly become stale and soggy, making it not quite so appealing for your moggie to munch on.

If you can, take the time to transfer the food from the bag you bought it in to an airtight container, as this will seal in aromas and make the food more palatable for your pet. This container should be cleaned regularly and kept in a clean dry environment out of the reach of animals and children.

The important thing to remember is to keep dry food dry, as cats prefer it when they can crunch on their dinner and will be less inclined to eat it if it's soggy.

When it comes to wet food, it's important to remember to cover cans when they've been opened and to store them in the fridge. However, this type of food goes off very quickly so if it isn't fed within 24 hours of opening it's best to throw it out and feed from a fresh can.

For this reason, many owners prefer to feed their feline friends using single-serve product, such as a pouch or foil tray, since these can be more economical and far easier to deal with than cans.
