“Cats” and “dental care” are not words you often see together, probably because cats are not the easiest customers when it comes to routinely brushing their teeth or checking the health of their gums. The thought of prizing your cat’s mouth open, even for a second, is enough to fill anyone with dread, which means many people often neglect this area of their cat’s care.
However, your cat’s dental health is very important, as dental disease can lead to a number of other diseases and tooth loss, which carries problems of its own. Studies have found that up to 90% of all cats over the age of four have some degree of dental disease, often characterised by sore, red gums, bad breath, excessive drooling, loose teeth and swelling. Behavioural changes may also be noted, including being off their food and grooming themselves less frequently.
So how can I keep on top of my cat’s dental health?
While some cats will tolerate a degree of tooth brushing if introduced to them early, most cats will ardently reject it, making for a very stressful situation.
It is sometimes recommended that rather than using a toothbrush or finger brush, applying some pet-safe toothpaste to the end of your finger and rubbing it along the gumline is a good compromise, but even this can be very challenging.
