Description

For use in small rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, hamsters, mice, gerbils, chinchillas and other small rodents up to 1250 g body weight, and birds less than 666 g body weight.

Does this or idiocy kill ear mites in rabbits?

John Cousins
  • Veterinary Surgeon

I cannot comment upon what idiocy may achieve, but this product does kill mites. It has a systemic effect through the active ingredient ivermectin, but repeated treatments may be needed to eradicate the parasite. Adding a few drops of olive oil to the ear canal is a traditional and reasonably effective treatment for mites within the ear too. It seems to work by blocking the respiratory spiracles of the mites, so they drown. It will not work for any mites which may be living on any other parts of the skin however, which sometimes happens. Personally I would do both treatments together, as the oil is soothing for the ear too and helps to loosen and elevate the waxy debris which can accumulate in the canal.
