Presentation

A clear transparent sterile gel containing 3.45mg/g ketanserin tartrate (equivalent to 2.5mg/g ketanserin).

Uses

For use in horses to encourage wound healing and for the prevention of the formation of hypergranulation tissue.

Dosage and administration

For cutaneous use only.

Remove any foreign bodies, necrotic tissue or pre-existing hypergranulation tissue before treatment is started.

Clean the wound thoroughly with clean warm water and then apply Vulketan, after bleeding has ceased, to the entire surface of the wound and the edges twice daily.

It is recommended to clean the wound with warm water before each treatment to remove the film of gel which forms over the wound. Bandaging of the wound and restraint of the limb are not necessary

Vulketan is sterile until first opened. It is important to keep the tube as clean as possible during use. Vulketan should be applied to the wound using sterile disposable gloves, and neither the tube nor remaining product within it should be allowed to touch the wound area.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

Contraindications

Do not use for deep (eg penetrating or puncture wounds) or infected wounds, or immediately following surgery.

For cutaneous use only. Do not apply in the eyes or on mucous membranes

Precautions

In view of its stimulating effect on the microcirculation, Vulketan should not be applied on fresh wounds until bleeding has stopped.

If exuberant granulation tissue has already developed in older wounds, it should be surgically removed before treatment is started.

Stabled horses with leg wounds may develop oedema, so they should be allowed some outside exercise during treatment.

In order to facilitate twice daily treatment, it is not recommended to bandage the wounds when being treated Vulketan.

Wash the wound with clear warm water prior to each treatment to remove the film of gel which forms over the wound.

Remove any foreign bodies or necrotic tissue from the wound prior to treating with Vulketan.

Further information

Ketanserin is a potent and selective serotonin S2-receptor antagonist. Antagonism of serotonin-induced vasoconstriction, platelet aggregation and the subsequent release of mediators, and the serotonin-induced increase in vascular permeability results in a better microcirculation and oxygen supply in the lesion. In addition ketanserin inhibits the formation of hypergranulation tissue.

Is Vulketan suitable for wounds were bone is exposed and infection still a risk

17th Jul 2015
Sharon

6 day old equine type two injury to front of fetlock, severed extensor tendon with bone exposed at the fetlock joint, , flushing and antibiotic currently being applied to dressing and pressure support bandaged, changed daily. Daily antibiotics given orally. Poor healing of open wound so far and not granulating. Is Vulketan suitable to use at this stage and is it as effective as penicillin applied direct to wound dressing at preventing infection of the wound ? Or should current treatment be continued until wound has started to skin over and bone has a covering ?

I have no personal experience of using this product, but my feeling is that it is not suitable for new, serious wounds such as you have described. Once healing has started it might well be appropriate to help this process complete normally, but this is usually only after bandaging is no longer required. It does not replace antibiotic, which you should continue to use. By all means do discuss this product with your vet and at some point it might well be helpful.
