Vitofyllin is given to older dogs to improve their alertness and energy levels. It has a variety of effects in the body, including improving blood flow to the brain and to muscles, stimulating brain function and acting as an anti-oxidant against free radicals. The usual dose rate is 3-5mg per kilogram bodyweight, given twice daily. Vitofyllin is not absorbed well from the stomach if food is present, so it is much better to give on an empty stomach (or with a tiny morsel of food) and then to feed 30 minutes later.

Since our Lakeland bitch was prescribed vitofylin for vestibular syndrome she seems to be drinking lots more water, is this a side effect?

  • Veterinary Advisor

Polydipsia (excessive water consumption) is not a known side effect of Vitofyllin. If your dog is drinking more than normal it would be best for your vet to take a look at her since there may be another underlying cause such as Cushings, Diabetes or Hyperthyroidism.
