Shelf life + suitability

Hope - Liver shunt kitty
  • VioVet Customer Since: May 2016
  • From: Somerset, United Kingdom

Would this be safe to use as a supplement for a 6 + week old kitten with possible liver shunt that is still bottle feeding and fussy on her milk and weaning foods? My concern is she may not get enough calories to maintain her weight as her activity increases.

John Cousins
  • Veterinary Surgeon

This is a high energy supplement and not really ideal for your cat. If she eats this, she might be put off other foods and then perhaps not get enough of the other nutrients she needs. I would suggest a general B vitamin supplement, then liquidised foods as needed.

Can this be given to ckd cats

  • VioVet Customer Since: May 2015
  • From: Lancashire, United Kingdom

can I give this to my cat she has chronic kidney disease and her appetite is poor, is this gel ok to give to her without damaging her kidneys.

John Cousins
  • Veterinary Surgeon

This could be suitable to give to your cat as a supplement on occasions, though it is not perfect as the only food. Ideally your cat should be on a commercial diet intended for this condition. The main thing is that your cat does take in enough food to maintain bodyweight, so you could weigh her periodically and decide if you need to add this.
