Description

Specific (Dechra) Weight Reduction Dog Food is a complete food for weight management. It can be used for dogs with obesity, diabetes mellitus, colitis, chronic diarrhoea, constipation or hyperlipidaemia. It has high levels of fibre but a low fat content to give a low energy density food. This means that your dogs can be fed more and hunger will be warded off for longer without weight gain. High protein levels will ensure that strong muscles are maintained and will ensure a satisfied appetite. L-Carnitine will also help to preserve muscle and will stimulate the oxidation of fat. Obese or overweight dogs often suffer from high joint stress. Omega 3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) will improve joint mobility and will assist your dog in having healthy skin and a shiny coat. The food only contains low gylcemic index cereals (whole wheat & oats) and a high fibre content combined with chromium will help to prevent postprandial hyperglycaemia. In a recent survey by Öko-test (April 2011), the German consumer magazine, CRD-1 Weight Reduction was the only diet to gain the highest and outstanding overall result.

Benefits

  • Low energy, high fibre - The low content of fat and high content of fibre result in a low energy density. Even during a period of weight reduction, this will enable the owner to feed a considerable amount of food, supporting that the dog’s appetite has been sated
  • Optimal weight loss - L-carnitine transports fatty acids into the mitochondria and stimulates oxidation of fat and preservation of muscles
  • High protein - The high protein content supports maintenance of muscles and satiation of the dog’s appetite during the weight reduction period
  • Joint support - Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) help maintain normal mobility in joints of obese dogs. Omega-3 fatty acids also support a healthy skin and coat
  • Diabetes mellitus - Cereals with a reduced glycemic index (whole wheat and oats), a high level of fibre and chromium reduce postprandial hyperglycemia

Feeding guidelines

During a weight reduction period, it is recommended to feed only 60% of the advised quantity of CRD-1 Weight Reduction for normal dogs. If the dog does not lose weight, it may be necessary to further reduce the daily quantity. The daily individual requirement may vary depending on factors such as breed, environment, season, activity etc. It is therefore advisable to continue monitoring condition and body weight, adjusting the amount fed accordingly.

It works! Its eaten quickly and with no complaints (at either end!!).

Coco would find a sandwich in a field of fully ripe corn. She's a thief, not fussy with what she eats and never knows when to stop. She put on weight as I was too soft. Now she's older, we've learnt how to keep her weight controlled and I use this either as the full part of her diet or in part (with other foods) and she's managed to maintain her weight.

Feeding guide

VioVet Visitor

When feeding weight reduction wet food for the obese dog, do you feed for the target weight you want to achieve or use the guidelines on the packaging for the weight of your dog now?

  • VioVet Staff

If you are wanting to help your dog lose weight using the Specific weight reduction feed then you should feed the amount listed as 'Daily feed amount in grams - weight reduction in obese dogs' for your dog's current weight.
For example if your dog is 30kg and needs to lose weight then you should feed 225g per day.

When your dog's weight normalises you can then transfer onto the 'weight control in obese prone dogs' amount, e.g. if your dog is then 25kg and a good weight then feed 325g daily.

This is different to normal dog diets that aren't specifically for weight loss, with a normal diet you should feed for your dog's target weight. If you need any further explanation please contact us on [email protected]
