What?
Winner of the BETA International Innovation Awards, the all new and improved Gut Balancer is a balanced combination of Pre and Pro-Biotics and contains a specially protected live yeast which ensures that high enough numbers of live yeast cells reach the hindgut to beneficially influence hindgut function. The rate at which it is fed also delivers the highest amount of yeast compared to any other product on the market ensuring it is highly and rapidly effective. Gut Balancer also contains a source of mannanoligosaccharide (MOS), fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and betaglucans, which help stimulate the growth of good bacteria and bind mycotoxins produced by fungal contamination of feed.

Why?
Unlike humans, horses rely heavily on fermentation by a number of different species of bacteria to digest plant material in the large intestine. Changes in diet, stress and exercise can lead to imbalances between the different species of bacteria, which in turn can upset the environment in the hindgut and cause overgrowth of bad bacteria. Fungal toxins (mycotoxins) which are common feed contaminants, but difficult or impossible to detect without laboratory testing, can lead to growth impairment, poor condition, poor health and poor performance.

Why is our Gut Balancer Unique?
Gut Balancer contains a protected live yeast of the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The yeast inside each granule is protected from acidity, heat and moisture by a layer of dead yeast cells which enhances stability meaning that more yeast cells reach the hindgut alive. Micro-organisms such as yeast which have a beneficial effect on health when eaten are often referred to as probiotics; when translated this means literally "for life". In the hindgut, probiotics such as specific species of yeasts if fed in sufficient amounts, and in a formulation that ensure they survive the conditions in the stomach and small intestines, can influence the balance between good and bad bacterial species. By using our unique protection system, we ensure the optimum level of live yeast reaches the hindgut without being affected by the conditions above. The benefits include stabilisation of the conditions in the large intestine resulting in the stimulation of natural fermentative activity, improving fibre digestion helping to realise and unlock potential from forages such as hay and haylage and aid the efficiency of digestion.

When?
Gut Balancer should be fed on a daily basis to help support a healthy Gastrointestinal (GI) tract and to help support gut health and aid digestion. It is also ideal for older horses, poor doers and horses and ponies that lose condition at any time of year. Gut Balancer may also be fed to horses or ponies at times of increased stress, travelling, competition, change of yard or a change in hay or feed etc.

45 Works, but pricey

I bought this to try for my Welsh mare who is very sensitive to touch, thinking it could be hind gut issues. The supplement works quickly, even without adding the full dose straight away. It does seem quite palatable as she can be fussy and has no problem eating her food with this added. Her sensitivity has definitely improved since sheā€™s been on this. When I run out of it there is a marked difference in her demeanour. I do wish you could buy it in bulk as the packet it comes in is awkward to open and reseal all the time. For the price I would expect it to come in a tub. The main drawback is the price, really. One of these packs lasts me a monthā€¦ Ā£40 a month soon adds up!

45 Smells yeasty

I can smell the yeast when I mix it into the wet feed.
Which hasnā€™t happened with any other gut product Iā€™ve tried.
It hasnā€™t helped my horseā€™s FFWS but perhaps Iā€™m not addressing the cause or irritation.
I shall keep using it because I know it contains the correct yeast and must be beneficial.

My horse recently had a period out of my care due to me being extremely unwell for 3months. He was left for large periods of time most days without any food at all. Subsequently he had started to develop hind gut ulcers. I have used protexin gut balancer in the past and found it fabulous but that horse had stomach ulcers. So I read up on this product and gave it a whirl. Four weeks in and I'm really happy. He's less grouchy around his belly and more willing to pick up hind feet. His poos no longer have the watery dribble afterwards. (Isn't the horse world glamorous). It's palatable as my boy usually gets suspicious when something new is added to his feed, but tucked right in as normal. I'd have no problem recommending this product to anyone.

Combining gut balancer with Gastrokind

Jay Casson

I am currently feeding Gastrokind as my mare has persistent loose droppings and seems uncomfortable being girthed. I suspect she may have developed ulcers. Would it be ok to add gut balancer to her feed alongside the Gastrokind?

  • VioVet Staff

I have contacted Science Supplements and they have confirmed both products are safe to use together.
If you are suspicious of ulcers then it is worth contacting your vet to rule this out before they worsen. Prescription medication may be required to resolve them.
