Totally the reverse to vetmedin. Effectiveness I cannot say I am not a vet but Spikes vet seems happy. It is a tablet that he spits out immediately if he can beat me to it, He hates them. and can identify them as soon as I get one from the packet.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Rilexine Palatable Tablets for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

My dog Daisy is a 26kg staffie X Bulldog. Who long will it take to make a difference

Ali

Daisy has a burst abscess next to her right eye and was prescribed Rilexine Hibiscrub and Metacom by the vet. How long will it take to notice a difference

  • VioVet Staff

The antibiotic will start working within hours of ingestion. How long it takes for recovery though depends on the type of infection, it is best running this question past your vet.

Side effects

GCRA

It says in the data sheet "Very rare cases of soft faeces and vomiting may be observed in animals during treatment." My pup has both of these symptoms. Should I contact my vet or is this considered within normal range for this medication?

  • VioVet Staff

If your pet experiences any side effects whilst using a medication then it is important you contact your vet just to be certain it is the medication causing these. They can also advise if you should stop the medication because of this.

Rilexine, how long should it be administered?

Laura

My frenchie had been on a 14 day course of 300mg. She had a cytopoint at the start of the course When stopped the skin flared again, i asked if she should have more rilexine, we were given another 14 days supply but had had a 3 day break. I can see a definite improvement when she's on them . How long should she stay on them?

  • VioVet Staff

Rilexine is an antibiotic and is used to treat bacterial infections. Your dog will need this if there is an infection still present so the length of treatment required can vary greatly. I recommend asking this question to your vet as only they will know how long the specific infection they are treating should take to resolve.

Dosage

Patricia

What is the correct dosage for a 9.4 kg dog with a bacterial infection?

  • VioVet Staff

This greatly varies depending on your vet's treatment protocol. I recommend seeking their advice for this, however I have pasted the standard formulary doseage below:

Dogs, Cats: 10–25 mg/kg p.o. q8–12h; i.m., s.c. q24h.

Hello,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The Rilexine active ingredient is Cefalexin, Cephalexin.

Hope that helps,

VioVet.

Crushable?

Ali

My dog has been prescribed Relexine 600 tablets but we are having difficulty getting him to eat them, he is on a restricted diet so can't give inside a treat. Can we crush them into his normal dry food? Is it safe? Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

These tablets are not coated and are perfectly OK to be given crumbled up into pieces. You can given them with food or water. However if mixed with dried food, the pieces will tend to fall to the bottom of the bowl and he will leave them. It would be much better to find a wet food to mix them with. Check with your vet if anything is suitable. If an allergy is suspected, then it is normally safe to give a completely different food item to what he has had before. (Often it is fine to give a little fish in oil, such as sardines, or duck, rabbit, venison etc. You must check with your vet about this first, but 99% of situations this is fine to do for dogs on restricted diets. I would add that the beef flavouring for the Rilexine tablets might be a concern in fact, so again you should check with your vet about this. Beef is often implicated in dietary allergies in dogs.)

For kitten age 2mths

Lila

Cn I give rilexine 75 palatable for my kitten age 2 mths cause by flu?

  • VioVet Staff

Cat flu is most commonly caused by Feline Herpes Virus-1 (FHV-1), or Feline Calicivirus (FCV). Rilexine would not have any effect on a flu virus but it is commonly used for secondary bacterial infections which are often associated with cat flu. It would be best for you to take your kitten to the vet to get them diagnosed and a suitable treatment in place.

Vaccination is the best way to protect your cat from the viruses mentioned, and this is usually carried out as a young kitten, and a booster given yearly.

We are able to supply prescription-only medication such as vaccines and antibiotics if you can send us a prescription from your vet, so it might be worth checking if this will save you some money.

Suspected Adverse Reaction

leanne

My Makita got given this drug ..they are sensitive to certain medication and says on packet not to give to animals that are sensitive ....she had a fit after she took it ...is that due to the drug and the breed ? As I think the vet should of known this

  • VioVet Staff

Dogs which are "allergic" to penicillin should not have this drug. Otherwise it is very safe. This is the sensitivity the warning applies to. If a dog reacts to Rilexine it is very unlikely to have a fit, so I should think this is a coincidence. However, there is nothig wrong with asking your vet about this.

If you still feel there might be a problem, you can report this to the authorities by going to https://www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/adversereactionreporting/?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

Rilexine 600 allergies

Marion Seviour

what are the side effects of this drug please. My dog takes 1 and 1/2 tablet twice daily. She is a large german shepherd. She is listless and tired and hungry all the time while taking them. Is this normal please. X

  • VioVet Staff

Most dogs do not show side effects from this antibiotic at all. A few dogs will display signs of nausea and occasionally abdominal discomfort. These could account for how your dog's behaving, though increased appetite would not fit particularly. It is usual to give the tablets with a meal to reduce any side effects, so make sure you are doing this.

As in the use of any drug, one has to balance the benefits against any possible side effects. It is very likely that your dog will quickly return to normal when you stop the medication. It is possible of course that your dog's behaviour is nothing to do with the medication and is down to some other underlying problem. If in doubt you should of course talk to your own vet.
