Description

Comprehensive support in a tasty liquid for cats & dogs with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or otherwise low blood potassium levels. RenaKal™ provides potassium, amino acids, iron and B-vitamins to help manage your pet's symptoms and improve their quality of life.

  • Potassium is vital for the normal functioning of muscles, and has a huge impact on heart health & circulation. Too little potassium in the blood results in a condition called hypokalaemia, and there can be many causes. In pets with CKD, too much potassium is lost via the large volumes of dilute urine, and due to lower appetite, too little is taken in with their regular food. The most common sign of hypokalaemia is muscle weakness, and shows through difficulty walking and the inability to lift their head up. Once diagnosed, it can be managed with daily supplementation.

  • Essential amino acids have wide-reaching benefits. Loss of muscle is common in pets with CKD, so RenaKal™ provides a source of amino acids (the building blocks of protein) in small but significant amounts, to help with protein production & maintenance of muscle mass. Amino acids also support many aspects of health, including function of the kidneys and immune system.

  • B-vitamins and iron help to boost energy, appetite and vitality. In pets with reduced kidney function, B-vitamins are lost via urine and cause a host of problems. They are key players in energy production as well as many processes which keep pets feeling well and happy. Iron deficiency in CKD is most often caused by reduced appetite. Low iron levels result in pets feeling lethargic and weak, and further reduces their appetite as they feel increasingly unwell but luckily this vicious cycle can be improved with a dietary supplement.

Important information:

Please ensure that you only feed RenaKal™ to your pet after your vet has diagnosed low blood potassium levels. Amount fed should be adjusted based on the degree of potassium depletion, under veterinary direction.

RenaKal™ contains 234mg/ml ionic Potassium (Potassium gluconate). It is designed to provide long term nutritional support to pets with chronic kidney disease/renal failure, or those with conditions which also result in low blood potassium levels.

Use with caution on animals suffering with cardiac disease. Do not feed to animals where high potassium may be encountered.

Feeding Guidelines

Shake well before use. Give 2ml per 4.5kg using the built in measuring pipette 1-3 times daily, or as recommended by your vet.

45 Potassium supplement for my cat

This is excellent. I have started using it as a more economical product for my cat who needs a pretty big regular dose of potassium. It's just as good as Kaminox, I find.

Checked with my vet who was happy for me to use this instead of of kaminox, which has increased hugely in price recently.
This smells really strong but cat loved it. He has a lot of allergies and I have only tried this for one day to check his reaction to it, whilst I still have kaminox on hand and he was fine, so I am optimistic about it.
It is a much runnier solution and is trickier to fill the pipette but I have just had to alter my technique.
Overall I am happy with this and so is the cat!

  • VioVet Staff

The dose for this supplement is as follows:
Shake well before use. Give 2ml per 4.5kg using the built in measuring pipette 1-3 times daily, or as recommended by your vet.

Your 27kg dog will therefore need 12ml one to three times daily. It is best to discuss with your vet regarding the exact doseage as this is often tapered based on the response of the potassium levels to the addition of the supplement.
Yes this can be administered with food.

Sarah

Hi there, could you advise the best way to use this product please. Would you use it in a kidney care kibble or just in ordinary pet food?

  • VioVet Staff

This supplement is best used alongside veteterinary advice. If your cat is already on a special kidney diet then you may not need the additional Potassium that it provides. The amino acids will be beneficial however you should check with your vet it is suitable for your specific pet's kidney disease.
