Description

Pro-Kolin Enterogenic is designed to be used long-term to help promote gastro-intestinal management Pro-Kolin Enterogenic contains several different ingredients which work together to achieve the desired effect. These include a special type of starch which passes down into the large intestine where it is fermented by the bacteria present to produce butyrate. This is the ideal food for the cells lining the large intestine and so promotes their health and function. There is also a mucopolysaccharide which reinforces the mucin lining the intestine, improving the important barrier function of the intestine. Pro-Kolin Enterogenic also contains a particular strain of the "good" bacterium Enterococcus faecium. The growth of the good bacteria is encourage preferentially by the prebiotics also included - (ructo-oligosaccharide, Gum arabic, mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) and beta-glucans. Beef flavouring is also included to provide great palatability.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Protexin Pro-Kolin Enterogenic, including answers from our team.

Can you put the powder in water?

Amanda

My cat is on a prescription hydrolysed dry food diet for severe IBD. Vet recommended Pro Kolin enterogenic powder alongside steroids and chlorambucil. He won't eat the biscuits with the powder on though. Can I dissolve the powder in his drinking water instead? Or how else do you recommend for cats to eat this on dry food please?

  • VioVet Staff

There is no information on the packaging regarding mixing with water. Therefore it is not known whether it will dissolve in this way, and it is likely your cat will reject the water it is mixed into anyway.
If mixed with a very palatable wet food your cat should take the product well. We recommend using an appropriate wet food for dosing the product, seeking your vet for advice on what diets would be suitable with the IBD.

Protexin Pro-Kolin Enterogenic sachets

Sue

Can I give this to my dog who suffers with pancreatitis and frequently suffers with upset stomach and diarrhoea.

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on the severity of the Pancreatitis. Some patients can be set off even by slight dietary changes and so it is best to ask your vet this question. It does contain artificial beef flavouring but it is not high in fat and so should be safe with a mild/moderate pancreatitis.

Pro-Kolin with other products

I have a 6 year old Lab, who, for all her life has been bothered with runny, water stools on and off. I have been giving her Digestive Aid plus Verm-x, made by GWF nutrition. My vet has advised giving her your Pro-Kolin Enterogenic, which I have done now for a month and tummy has been fine. My question is, do I continue with Digestive aid and Pro-Kolin, am I doubling up with ingredients? She is prone to B12 deficiency. For a month she has been getting both, what's your thoughts please?

  • VioVet Staff

Based on the ingredient list for these products, they do not share the same ingredients. However this cannot be guaranteed as the Verm-x contains whole herbal ingreidnets, the individual ingredients within each herb may be similar to some of the Protexin Pro-Kolin ingredients.
It is therefore advised to just administer the product that your vet has recommended. It is unlikely that giving both will cause any issues though but this cannot be guaranteed.

Vestibular Syndrome

Mrs Carol Siddons

Will this product help with sickness bought on by Vestibular syndrome my dog is 9 and is being sick at least twice a day, if not please can you advise what I can give her.

Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Sickness related to Vestibular Syndrome is more likely related to the motion sickness brought on by the condition. Products like Pro-Kolin work to help reduce symptoms of intestinal upset and so they are unlikely to help your dog's nausia wtih Vestibular Syndrome. I recommend contacting your vet to discuss this, they can prescribe or administer anti-sickness injections to ease the signs.

Pork allergy

Charlotte

Does this product contain any pork products?

  • VioVet Staff

I have contacted Protexin with your query who have replied with the following:

I can confirm that there are no pork products/by-products within
Pro-Kolin Enterogenic, and the meat flavourings are entirely artificial
so are safe to use in dogs/cats with specific meat allergies.

Yeast infection in ears

Janey

My dog suffers with yeast infections in his ears and also has a sensitive stomach. Would this product be suitable for him as it contains a type of yeast?

  • VioVet Staff

The yeast infections on your dog's skin/ears cannot be caused by yeast that is ingested. They are in two very different parts of the body with very different microbiomes.
The yeast causing the infections on your dog's skin are actually normally present on healthy skin but it is often underlying conditions like allergies that mean they overgrow and cause issues.

Is this product used alongside Pro-Kolin paste or stand-alone?

Carina

My 10 year old dog has recurring bouts of colitis (several tests carried out over 2 years with our vet). I give him Purina Fortiflora at the moment but am thinking of switching to Pro-Kolin Enterogenic. When he has a bad bout, I also give him Pro-Kolin paste for a few days as well. Can I use both products together?

  • VioVet Staff

This product is normally used instead of prokolin paste. They both contain the same probiotic, the differences are that the sachets have additional vitamin b12 whilst the paste has additional stool firmers. The paste is more suited to short term diarrhoea whilst the sachets for supporting long term problems. You can use both together but this would be doubling up on the probiotic. Whilst this is unlikely to cause any harm it is unecessary.

Suitable for newborn puppies?

Sue

I have a litter of puppies, now 11 days old, one of whom has started with diarrhoea this evening. Is this product suitable for such young pups and if so how would it be given? As a paste on the tongue?

  • VioVet Staff

I would not suggest using this particular product on puppies which are still on an all-milk diet. A pro-biotic might be fine, but this is a pre-biotic too, meaning it contains certain types of food as well as "good" bacteria. It might well be OK to use, but I would suggest something like Protexin Pro-Soluble instead. A tiny amount mixed with water can be dropped on the tongue, or just into the mouth.

Hi i have an 18 wk old, olde tyme bulldogge who for the last week has got diarrhoea more on then off. Numerous visits to the vets Injections which work short term 2 lots of antibiotics, worming havent cured the problem hes had pro kolin paste for a day his stools are firmer but still not right should i try this? Hes on fish 4 puppies which is hypoallergenic

  • VioVet Staff

This should be a very good product to give your dog and it has a good chance of being helpful. In addition you should feed your dog small, frequent meals. It is best to reduce the total amount of food going through the gut to give the digestion an easier time, but do not stop completely. Probably if you give your dog 4 meals per day, but make each one about half the amount your dog would like to eat, then the digestion will get back in control much more quickly and ultimately your dog will do better and get more benefit from its food. Your dog should finish each small meal by licking out the bowl and looking around for more. If this is not happening, you are giving too much and overloading the digestion. You should not allow it to fill itself up until the stools have been well formed for a few days. This one measure is often as useful as any other. If this and the Pro-Kolin fail to work, then you might need to look at a different food as well as go back to your vet. I would try the Pro-Kolin and reduced food first, as long as your dog is basically bight and perky.

Does Pro-Kolin Enterogenic contain calories?

Ann

  • VioVet customer since 2014
  • From: Middx, United Kingdom

My 9 year old tom cat has been diagnosed with colitis by my vet. She said it was likely to be stress or diet related. He is now on zylkene and Hills I/d Gastrointestinal food, which is helpful. I am also giving him Pro-Kolin enterogenic, but I have noticed that it contains starch. Ginger easily puts on weight, because he does not know when to stop eating. Do I need to feed him less, because of potential calories in the Pro-Kolin Enterogenic?

  • VioVet Staff

The starch that is present is the Pro-Kolin Enterogenic is actually a resistant starch, this means that is doesn’t get digested in the stomach and small intestine as other starches do and instead, it reaches the colon where it is fermented by the beneficial bacteria. This fermentation of the resistant starch produces short-chain fatty acids that are used as a food source by the colonocyte cells that make up the lining on the colon. As such, it is not an energy source that is available directly to the animal as other starches would be and therefore any calories present (which are minimal) should not impact the cat’s weight.

As with any cat that is prone to gaining weight, the volume of food that is fed should be adjusted to maintain an ideal bodyweight, but the addition of the Pro-Kolin Enterogenic should not adversely affect this situation.
