55 Stomach calming
Verified Purchase

We live and exercise in the country and unfortunately Paddy sometimes has a penchant for nasty things which can upset his stomach. This product was proscribed for Paddy by our vet on an earlier occasion and successfully settled his stomach, so we felt that there was no reason to pay vets fees again for a repeat prescription.

55 Keeping poos firm
Verified Purchase

By on 2 August 2022

These pro and prebiotic are fantastic! Really great price too. I bought them as our dog has a very sensitive tum and was on an elimination diet as he has had colitis. After a week his poos started to change from milk shake texture to a sloppy splat! After about 4 or 5 weeks his poos were normal. Firm, easy to pick up and no smell.
I would definitely recommend these if your dog is getting over a tum bug or as a long term treatment for sensitive tums. Xxx

55 No to nasty poos!
Verified Purchase

By on 13 July 2022

I have been feeding a new rescue dog we have had an elimination diet for a few months as he never has firm poos and is sensitive to most foods other than fish, rabbit and in small amounts lamb. He loves his berries and veggies though. Our vet suggested we put him on their suggested brand of pre/ probiotic but at £52 for a months supply I checked out Viovet and found this Procolin one that lasts for 50 days for under £30. I just pop one in with Neo’s food each morning and with a new complete diet mainly white fish alongside these tummy pills he is now doing solid poos every day and just one big one rather than 3 or 4 or 5 during the day! Also the awful rotten cabbage stenches he made have disappeared and now he just breaks wind loudly and a faint pouff wafts to the air! The poo does not smell when you pick it up if it is in the garden and has cooled off which is also much nicer! I really recommend these to doggies, not sure about cats, who have tummy troubles...and their hoomans of course! X

Use in puppies

Kate Knowles

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

Hi, can this be used for a puppy with yeast infection (puppy is 26 weeks)

  • VioVet Staff

Yes Synbiotic DC is safe for use in your 26 week puppy. Synbiotic DC can be used in animals from 2 weeks of age, however it is advisde to consult your veterinary surgeon first before using Synbiotic DC in animals younger than 8 weeks of age.

Whether it will help the yeast infection depends on the location of this. It is best discussed with your vet how to resolve the infection.

Dosage

Can you please confirm dosage for 50 kilo dog is still one capsule per day

  • VioVet Staff

Yes the dose is 'one capsule daily by mouth or as advised by your veterinary surgeon', regardless of the weight. So your 50kg will need this dose too unless your vet advises to give more/less.

How much and how long?

Lynda Mears

How much and how long?
Our 14-year-old labrador has had several courses of antibiotics recently and I am sure this will help her rumbling tum. After finishing the antibiotics, how long should I give her the protexin and for a 31 kg dog, one tablet or two? Many thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

Hello,

Thank you for your query.

Normally a 3-5 day course of a probiotic like protexin Prokolin will resolve a case of diarrhoea.

It is highly advisable to check with your vet that it is ok to introduce this product, but otherwise 3-5 days of probiotic (one 60ml syringe of Prokolin) should be enough for a mild gastroenteritis (scavenging/viral related diarrhoea).

We hope this helps.

Can these be taken with antibiotics?

Briony

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Cornwall, United Kingdom

My Labrador has been suffering with gut infections and itchy skin problems over the past six months. My vet keeps prescribing him antibiotics which work short term but it just keeps coming back. He is currently on a month long course and I am eager to get him started on the recently purchased Synbiotic D-C. Can they be taken alongside each other? I know that some probiotics for humans don't always work with antibiotics!

  • VioVet Staff

It is much less likely to be helpful to give the probiotic at the same time as the antibiotics, so the usual advice is to start probiotics straight after the antibiotics finish.

I wonder if the antibiotics seem to help (is any other treatment given at the same time, confusing the picture?) If the antibiotic helps the skin, then there must be some infection present at the time. If this keeps happening, there must be some underlying trigger to allow it to happen. In this case, the probiotic makes sense but is not likely to be the full answer. A skin supplement such as Yumega Plus would probably be beneficial too. An investigation into possible dietary allergy might make sense, especially if ongoiong itchiness is a feature of your dog's condition.

Soft tissue infection continuous in mouth

Tyson

Would protexin keep it under control

  • VioVet Staff

I do not think this will work. If there is an ongoing infection in the mouth, there must be something preventing it from clearing up (foreign body, tooth root infection, abnormal growth etc). It might be that this needs finding and sorting out, then the infection will clear by itself. Sometimes though it can be very difficult to identify the underlying cause. In either case, I fear that this product will not make much difference. It would do no harm if you feel you have no other options and just wanted to try though.

Synbiotic capsual and entrogenic sachet

lynne

Can i give my dog the synbiotic capsual in the morning and an entrogenic sachet at night . Hes a lurcher with a really sensitive stomach and so far the sachets at night work but their very expensive to give two per day .

  • VioVet Staff

It would be perfectly safe to do as you ask. You would have to see how it worked. These are very safe supplements and you will do no harm. It is always the hope that you can in time reduce the amount you give anyway. It is also worth looking at trialing different diets to see if they might be more easily digested.

Westie with colitis?

Alison Cross

  • VioVet customer since 2014
  • From: East Riding of Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Hi, my Westie has colitis - would you recommend this product as a daily supplement for him? Would they help reduce the attacks? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Depending on the underlying cause of the symptoms you observe, it is quite possible that this product would be effective. I certainly expect it would be safe, so it is perfectly OK to try it and see how you get on. Ideally if your dog suffers regular episodes of colitis then you and your vet should try and work out it there is a particular underlying cause which could be treated directly. Sometimes a suitable change in diet will be effective in fact. However as an alternative, you could certainly try this product. If it works, then you could continue giving it.

Sizes?

Leanne

Hi... Read somewhere that this product is to be used for small pets. Just wondered whether a dog weighing over 28kg can still benefit from this product?

  • VioVet Staff

This product should be just as beneficial to large dogs as small, but you would probably need to increase the dose you give. I would suggest two capsules daily to a large dog.

Okay for cats too ?

Brenda

Have 2 cats with IBS issues. Would this supplement be ok for them? It is listed for dogs only

  • VioVet Staff

The use of so-called prebiotics in cats has been the subject of less research than in dogs, but the work which has been done suggests that cats will benefit in a very similar way to dogs and other species. The bacterial population inhabiting the large intestine of cats is influenced positively by prebiotics and this is expected to be beneficial to general health as in other species. It is safe to use and could well be beneficial to your cats.
