55 My 22 year old colicky if wormed, hence I use egg counts for her to ascertain any worm burden. For red worm, my Vet does a blood to again ascertain if there is red worm as they leave enzymes in the blood

Best time of year

Susan Burtenshaw

Please could you advise, when is the best time of year to carry out this test?

  • VioVet Staff

Pinworm is not a seasonal worm and it can happen anytime of year. Signs of infection are often rubbing or excessive licking of the rear area. If you are suspicious then it is a good idea to perform a pinworm test just in case.
If confirmed then a 5 day course of Fenbendazole (e.g. Panacur) or a double dose of Pyrantel (e.g. Strongid-P) would work to treat it. This must be combined with effective stable cleaning to prevent reinfection.

Are there no kits for doing four horses at the moment, instead of buying single kits? Thanks :)

  • VioVet Staff

Hi Susan,

Unfortunately only single kits are available at the moment.

Sorry about that,

VioVet.
