Description

Panacur Rabbit Paste has been produced to control parasites such as intestinal worms as well as the potentially serious pathogen E.cuniculi in domestic rabbits. Panacur Rabbit has a pleasant flavour for rabbits and can easily be syringed slowly into the side of the mouth. Each syringe contains enough paste for one dose per day for 9 days (suitable for routine treatment of intestinal worms).

E.cuniculi is a microscopic parasite which infects many rabbits without causing any signs of illness or disease at all, remaining dormant for years. However in some individuals, especially after a stressful event, it can suddenly and catastrophically cause serious disease. This often affects the rabbits balance and posture, producing a marked head-tilt and a tendency to fall to one side, or hind-limb paralysis. For rabbits showing clinical signs of E.cuniculi, a 28 day course of Panacur ir recommended. See below for dosage information.

A 9 day course of treatment for intestinal worms when a new rabbit is purchased is recommended. This can be repeated 2-4 times per year where rabbits are kept in groups.

Each syringe contains 5 g of18.75% fenbendazole paste. For oral anthelmintic treatment of domestic rabbits use: 1 syringe graduation per 2.5 kg bodyweight (20 mg/kg fenbendazole) daily for 9 consecutive days. Consult your vet for further information or if you are concerned about protozoal infection (E.cuniculi).

Further information

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is an intracellular protozoan parasite which can cause a range of clinical signs including hind limb paresis, head tilt, collapse, urinary incontinence, cataract formation and lens-induced uveitis and death. Transmission is primarily via ingestion of spores shed in the urine contaminating food and/or water.

A 2006 UK study showed a seroprevalence of 52% in domestic rabbits indicating the widespread nature of the parasite.

Panacur Rabbit is an aid in the control of E. cuniculi and it is recommended that additional preventative measures are taken such as ensuring that food and water are placed appropriately to prevent urine contamination.

E. cuniculi has zoonotic potential and infection has been reported in immunosuppressed people.

We give this to our bunny after he was so ill he couldnā€™t walk and we didnā€™t think he would make it through the night but he fought on and is amazingly fit again, the vets were shocked as when we took him home they didnā€™t think he would get through the night but with lots of tlc he made it through and now has his panacur every three months as a preventative measure. Canā€™t rate it highly enough.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Panacur Rabbit Wormer Oral Paste, including answers from our team.

How much should I give

Kathrine

My bunny weights 3.2 kg how much should I give?

  • VioVet Staff

Your rabbit will need 1+1/4 syringe graduations per dose. This will be difficult to accurately administer so it is advised to use 1 graduation if you are not confident you can carry this out.

How much should i give

My rabbit Weight

My rabbit weights 2.8 kg how much should i give him

  • VioVet Staff

As your rabbit is very close to the 2.5kg mark then it is advised to give 1 syringe graduation per dose. As a preventative it is advised this is given daily for 9 consecutive days 2 to 4 times a year. As a treatment for E.cuniculi it is advised this is given daily for 28 consecutive days.

Worming dosage

Helen

My netherland dwarf rabbit weighs 1.5 kilos how much panacur wormer do I give to him?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this product states 'Only treat rabbits weighing greater than 2.5 kg with this product.' Therefore it should not be used in your dwarf rabbit, unless your vet can advise an appropriate safe doseage.

Quantity per day for young rabbits

RaeH

I have two 11 week old dutch lop x rabbits. They weigh 1kg each. How much wormer per day should I give them as it would be less than one increment a day?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this product states the following:
Only treat rabbits weighing greater than 2.5 kg with this product.
This means any use of it in rabbits weighing under 2.5kg is off license. Theoretically you could attempt to give 1/2 a syringe graduation to each of your rabbits but you would need to discuss this with your vet as it is not a licensed use of the medication.

How many doses?

Rory

How many doses does each syringe contain? If treatment is needed over 9 days will one syringe be enough?

  • VioVet Staff

There are 18 graduations in total per syringe, and 1 graduation of the syringe treats 2.5kg of rabbit. So this depends on how heavy your rabbit is. The average rabbit is around 2.5kg so this should last up to 18 days which will be enough for the 9 day period you need.

Can pregnant rabbits take this ?

Laura

My doe has worms in her pop and may possibly be pregnant.
Can she still have this treatment? And should I do 28 days?

  • VioVet Staff

Whilst the cat/dog version of this product is proven safe to use in pregnant cats/dogs, there is no data to show that the rabbit version is safe for use in pregnant rabbits. I would therefore only use it in your rabbit alongside veterinary advice.

Expiry date

Ky

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Singapore, Singapore

When is the expiry date and how frequent do i feed this? I only have one bunny who weighs 1.3kg

  • VioVet Staff

Unfortunately we cannot advise on specific expiries, but we guarantee the expiry date will be greater than 6 months from time of ordering.
It is recommended according to the data sheet that you treat for 9 consecutive days for routine worming or 28 consecutive days for E.cuniculi infections. There unfortunately is no way to prevent E.cuniculi or worms in rabbits completely apart from using this product almost continuosly.

9 September 2015 at 10:39pm

How many?

Joanne

I have 2 rabbits how many syringes will I need to effectively treat them both?

Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on the weight of your rabbits. One syringe will provide a full 9 day course for one rabbit of up to 5kg bodyweight. If your rabbits are smaller and weigh 2.5kg or less, then one syringe will do a nine-day course for both of them. Most rabbits are in the range 2.5kg to 5kg and so need one syringe each, but some can be heavier than this and need proportionately more. You do need to weigh your rabbits first, even if it just an approximate weight.

How many?

Sam

My Guinea Pig weighs 475g how many of these syringes do I need for a preventative regime?

  • VioVet Staff

Most guinea pigs do not suffer from intestinal parasites in any significant way at all. There is no need or point in giving medication prophylactically like this. As long as you concentrate on providing good quality food including fresh greens/grass and a clean environment, your guinea pig should do perfectly well.
