35 Suprisingly small amount of food per pack

Negatives: The 475g pack once opened had such a small amount of food in that it quickly became apparent they were over charging - by a LOT . I have a 19kg dog, recommended number of 'medallions' (size of a cookie) to feed my dog is 3-5 per day. I counted the medallions and there were 26 in the pack. Meaning it is only 5 days worth of food for £25. I gave my dog only 2.5 medallions - once soaked & hydrated its about a small cup and a half of dog food. The positives: paid £1.99 for fast delivery and it arrived within two days - great! Also I have two dogs with different tastes and needs, BOTH dogs wolfed the food down - so it appeals to most taste buds. It doesnt smell even when hydrated. Pack is resealable and wont 'go off' like wet food - great for on the road travelling / caravan / RV life with where no fridge is available or where fridge space is limited. If they were not so profit orientated - and doubled the quantity in the bag - I would not hesitate to subscribe for repeat deliveries for the forseeable future. Sadly - having two dogs - the sheer lack of quantity makes it financially non viable to sustain. A note: If your dog is allergic to protein (gives it the runs or prone to anal gland build up) then this product may not be for you as the protein % is pretty high.

45 Best food for allergies

After trying loads of different foods including grain free I was getting pretty desperate to find something to calm down his tummy & itchy paws as he would make them bleed. After a few weeks on this food he improved dramatically as far as the tummy was concerned although we still do have issues with the paws.

55 Great for fussy dogs

My dog is fussy beyond belief, to the point that she would refuse to eat any of her food for multiple days in a row, no matter the brand, flavour or texture. This is the first and only food (coupled with the Orijen dry biscuits) that she has ever consistently eaten every day and even wanted more than she was given!

Naturally this food is arguably one of the absolute best dog foods in terms of nutrition due to the extremely high quality and composition of ingredients, and the minimal amount of processing compared to other foods.

I can't praise the price of the food though unfortunately, I feel this is only a sensible choice for smaller dogs if you are planning on feeding it on a regular basis, I shudder at the thought of trying to buy enough for anything much larger than my 10kg dog, though you get what you pay for I suppose! Otherwise, it might be nice as a treat every now and then for bigger pup.

Preparation is definitely different, though it really is very simple, the food comes in medallions which are quite soft and break easily so you can divide it into as large or small bite sized pieces as your dog prefers, and then covering them with a layer of warm to hot water so that they are just submerged, and leave it to re-hydrate for about 5 minutes. You can then drain the water, or feed as is.

Can the freeze dried be given with kibble

Hi could you please tell me if the freeze dried food can also be mixed with the orijen kibble?

  • VioVet Staff

Thank you for your question,

Yes. The best way to do so is by crumbling a small amount of freeze-dried ORIJEN onto ORIJEN dry food.

I hope this helps, if you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us.

How many medallions?

Jo T

Hi, this food sound fab.
I would like to work out how long a bag of 454g would last.
Do you know approximately how many medallions per bag, or how many grams a medallion weighs.

Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

The 170g bag contains 12 medallions and the 454g bag contains 30 medallions.
