Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Oralade GI Support Fluid for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Good for healthy dog

Can you give oralade to your dog as an energy booster, my dog isn't ill she has a little bit of a loose stool today & wondered if giving her some oaralade will help?? I didn't know if it was just something they have after an illness which is what she's had it for in the past!?

  • VioVet Staff

Oralade GI Support is primarily intended for rehydration of the guts to improve recovery from intestinal issues like diarrhoea. If your dog has loose stools then it should help improve the condition. It does contains sugars/electrolytes so will provide some form of energy boost too.
If you are looking to solely firm up the stools rather than rehydrate your dog too then I recommend a product like ReguTum paste as these are more suited to stool firming.

Would this help a puppy that is a few days old with constipation?

  • VioVet Staff

This product will help hydrate and rehydrate anpuppy with constipation which in turn can help the condition. However I recommend contacting your vet to diagnose the issue as a pup should not be constipated and there could be an underlying issue to this.

To establish whether this can be kept in for emergencies

- should it be stored in the fridge?
- how long will it typically last?

  • VioVet Staff

The Oralade we currently have in stock has an expiry of February 2020 if unopened. It should be stored in a cool, dry place such as a cupboard. Once opened you should keep it in the fridge and use within 3 days or freeze and re-use within 12 months.

Can puppies have oralade from 4 weeks old?
Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, Oralade is suitable to give from birth so should be fine for 4 weeks old puppies.

Is this suitable for a cat with IBD?

My cat has IBD and is basically allergic to anything with intact protein. He's on a hydrolysed diet, but can only have dry food. He's refuses to drink water unless he's very dehydrated. Would this product be suitable to help keep him hydrated without triggering his IBD?

  • VioVet Staff

This product might be OK for your dog, but the chicken liver flavouring might possibly trigger the IBD. The flavouring has been partly broken down just as in the hydrolysed veterinary diets and so this might make it acceptable, but this might not be adequate and you would only know by trying it. You can also offer water in glass or ceramic bowls on window sills and similar places around the house as this encourages cats to drink a bit more. You can even buy a water fountain and some cats drink well from these.
