EXPERT TIPS

Why feed an electrolyte supplement?

  • If electrolytes are not replaced after sweating the horse will not feel thirsty and will not drink – the horse will become dehydrated. This will lead to poor performance and if this progresses it can lead to collapse.
  • Normal feed and forage does not contain adequate levels of electrolytes to replace those lost through significant sweating. This is why feeding an electrolyte supplement is important.
  • All sweating horses require supplementary electrolytes and are essential for optimum performance and wellbeing no matter what level or discipline.

How to feed electrolytes?

  • For a one off episode of sweating (e.g. stress or travelling) - a single dose of electrolytes is likely to be effective.
  • For a significant one off episode of sweating (e.g. competing in warm weather) – feed electrolytes for a few days on and after the sweating.
  • For regular sweating (e.g. schooling daily during warm or hot weather) – feed electrolytes daily.
  • NETTEX Electrolyte Maintenance Powder and NETTEX Electrolyte Maintenance Liquid are ideal for regular use.
  • NETTEX Electrolyte Syringe Paste Boost is ideal for one off use or as a ‘Top-up’.

I've used this a few days before a competition and I believe it has improved my show cobs performance. It has given him an extra energy boost but hasn't made him fizzy. My only negative is the ball inside the lid hadn't helped with doseage!

15 Electrolytes - too potent

The taste of this electrolyte supplement is extremely strong. I’m summer, when it’s mainly needed, I’m feeding quite small feeds as they’re grazing. Would not eat feeds, tried it with friends horse would not eat feeds. Was unable to use it.

55 Liquid Electrolytes

Use this in my horses feed when its hot and she responds really well. She can be fussy and won't drink water that smells of electrolytes and sometimes won't eat her feed if it smells too strongly of flavoured electrolytes but never has a problem when I use this product! The bottle is also really easy to use with measurements already in place and good instructions on the back as well as dosage instructions.

30ml syringe

What size horse does a 30ml syringe do please?

  • VioVet Staff

Since this is a supplement rather than a medicine, there isn't a strict "dose" as such. It is intended that a whole syringe is given to any size horse. It is true that this will have less effect in some ways on a larger horse, but it will do no harm in a small pony, but would still benefit any size horse. It would be possible to give two syringes to a heavy horse which has sweated a lot, but this is not normally done.
