Elderly dogs with arthritis

7th Apr 2015
Antonia

I have two elderly dogs (turned 10 years), one with hip dysplasia and arthritis and the other with (I think, but not diagnosed) with old age stiffness, possibly arthritis. They both already take glucosamine chondroitin supplement daily. I started them on this because it works on me (I have arthritis). A also now take omega 3 and have been searching for a dog omega 3 capsule/ tablet to give them, because it helps me. I can't find a tablet form anywhere. Will it be beneficial for my boys? I know they love going out and are enthusiastic for walks but they are slowing down quickly now but I'm not sure if it's general old age or aching bones. They have no problem taking tablets but turn their nose up at additives in their food and I don't waste things. How much would they need to take (22 kilos and 12 kilos) and would it be OK to put drops on their tongues?

I would certainly continue with the glucosamine/chondroitin and it is possible to add an Omega 3 supplement. I would suggest Omega Aid which is on the website and the dose is in the description. It is not certain if this helps joint stiffness or not, but some people feel that it helps their dogs and it is safe enough.

Shedding of hair

Tannaz

I have a 3 month old shih tzu and I've noticed he sheds a lot of hair but not enough to make a visible difference to his coat. He is very happy and healthy and I brush him everyday so I'm not sure why this is so. Will this product help?

This product can certainly help condition the skin and coat. It might not stop him shedding any hair. Many dogs shed some hair all the time and for them it is normal. At 3 months of age, lots of dogs are changing their coat from puppy to adult anyway. Losing hair is not a problem at all as long as it is being replaced at the same rate. You will just have to brush the loose hair away, but this could be a perfectly normal and healthy thing to be happening.
