Gas colic

13th Aug 2015
VioVet Visitor

My mare Is prone to colic. I've had the vet out to treat her twice for this and the second time we had a gastroendoscopy to check for ulcers - they was a small one found and was treated using oral syringes of peptizole, she was cleared of ulcers. A week after the vet had been to do the second gastroendoscopy she was showing signs of mild colic again; lying down and getting back up, sitting like a dog, pawing the ground etc - she sounded very gassy and was tucked up. I've just started her on coligone to see if this improves her (it will be difficult to tell as this doesn't occur all the time) but I'm looking for a supplement to use long term to help her? I've used pink powder after the first bout of colic as a balancer. Thanks in advance, Lauren.

There are lots of different caused of colic and I would have to wonder if there might be a different cause for the rapid recurrence of the symptoms this time. It is wort checking with your vet but if he/she believes that gastric ulceration is to blame, more Peptizole might be needed. Something like Protexin Acid Ease might be a more suitable supplement to use at the same time and I would recommend that.

Horse has developed lumps

Can it cause side effects?

Horse has came up in lots of lumps days after starting this. Looks like protein lumps but haven't changed her feeds!

This sounds like she is reacting to something. It could certainly be the NAF product so I would stop giving it and see if the skin clears up. Horses can occasionally react to almost anything but it is a very individual response and cannot be predicted. You might get away with using the product again in future at a lower dose. If it does not clear up soon, I would suggest your vet takes a look at it.
