Tablets seem to work. My dog has been taking them for many years. Just seems a shame whenever I order them (other than the vets) they are never in stock and it always seems a long wait them. Need to order well in advance .

I have an old dog with dental and gum issues who isn't well enough for surgery and has these long term to prevent problems arising. so far they seem to be doing the job and the dog is happy. These are easier to give than the old human equivalent he was on and don't appear to have side effects. worth it just for the comfort the dog has.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Metrobactin Tablets, including answers from our team.

Will Metrobactin cause decreased appetite

Mrs Carnan

Will metrobactin cause loss of appetite?

  • VioVet Staff

The possible adverse effects of this medication according to the datasheet are as follows:
The following adverse reactions may occur after administration of metronidazole: vomiting, hepatotoxicity, neutropenia. In very rare cases neurologic signs may cccur.

Reduced appetite is not one of the above, we recommend contacting your vet to discuss this further. It may be a sign that the underlying problem is worsening.

Itching

Susanne

Can Metrobactin cause constant itching in my three yr old cavapoo. as he seems to be doing this all the time since starting these now day two?

  • VioVet Staff

Itching is not one of the listed side effects of Metrobactin so it is unlikely related to using the medication. There could be another underlying cause to this, I advise discussing this with your vet.

Is this product made to taste better to a cat then the human one?

Marie-Eve Bedard

Hi,

Are these tablets made specifically for animals and will be less gag and foaming at the mouth inducing then the human version? If so, can they still be portioned off as 250mg is quite a lot for a cat.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, these tablets are made specifically for cats and dogs and do not have palatibility issues usually. That said some cats can be more fussy than others. The tablets can be split and given according to the weight of your cat. Please see dosage table below.

Metronidozole

Carol Rich

  • VioVet customer since 2013

Is Metrobactin exactly the same as Metronidozole? My old dog has Meronidozole long term for upset tum but this time been prescribed 3/4 of a tablet of these instead( He used to have 400mg metronidozole)?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, Metrobactin contains Metronidazole. The Metrobactin tablets contain 500mg of Metronidazole as oppose to the 400mg Metronidazole tablets. This is why your vet has prescribed 3/4 of a tablet of Metrobactin rather than a whole one.
