Loose stools

Lisa Berry

My kitten was neutered yesterday and prescribed loxicom as a pain relief. Today he’s had severe diarrhoea alongside some fresh blood (I think it’s food related as if I feed too much of one brand, this seems to be a common theme). Can I give this alongside loxicom?

He was also recently diagnosed with giardia but his latest sample came back clear.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes you can give Kaogel alongside Loxicom, however we strongly advise you see your vet for this. It is highly likely they will recommend stopping the Loxicom as it is not advised to use NSAID drugs like this with bloody diarrhoea. They may recommend some other medications to use.

Mysterious Diarrhoea

Hayley Noon

PussKat has had severe diarrhoea for several months now. She has had every possible test at our vets but they do not know what is causing it. She is an elderly Bengal cat (approx 14years old), with a very good appetite, although she is losing weight. PussKat had pancreatitis about 3 years ago but this was ruled out by our vet. Would this product help her?

  • VioVet Staff

A stool firming product is a good idea to help with diarrhoea, however it will not resolve the underlying cause to the diarrhoea. It is best to follow their advice primarily on how to treat the underlying issue.
Kaogel is a good choice to try, we also recommend checking out ReguTum Fibre Care. You should run any treatment changes past your vet though. If the diarrhoea is allergy or diet based then adding supplements may not be appropriate.

Cat with ibd

alan

my cat because of his condition has liquid motions. will this product firm his poo

  • VioVet Staff

The Kaolin within Kaogel helps to protect and secure
the lining of the intestine and absorbs toxins from within the
intestine. It is also known to increase faecal bulk, thus promoting
firmer stools. It should help firm your cat's motions but it will not treat the underlying IBD, I recommend following your vets treatment plan to do this.

How to administer

MD

Hi, how do you administer this medicine? Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

This is usually given directly into the mouth, by teaspoon or using a syringe. (You can buy syringes cheaply from us if you want, click on the link or use the search box on the website. They are only a few pence each.) A 2.5ml or 5ml syringe would normally be good for Kaogel, depending on the size of your dog. A 20kg dog would benefit from 5mls given 4 times per day ideally. The dose can be halved if the diarrhoes is not too bad.

Number of days to administer

Lee scattergood

How long should you give a puppy this medicine is it 2 or 3 days thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Usually according to effect but up to 5 days is acceptable. If diarrhoea persists beyond that point, it is sensible to have a vet check the puppy and perhaps re-evaluate the diet (and ensure worming is up to date).

Safe for kittens?

J A Smith

  • VioVet customer since 2011
  • From: West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

I have a five month old kitten with loose stools, is this product suitable?

  • VioVet Staff

Kaogel is a traditional and safe treatment. It is much better if combined with reduced feeding levels for a while. Kittens with loose stools are often over-eating and over-loading their digestions. Modern cat foods are very appetising. Several small snacks every day is ideal. Each one should be polished off very quickly and the kitten should be looking for more, but not given any until the next small snack. Simply doing this will usually sort out the loose stools quite quickly, often without medication. Failing that, one of the pro-biotic mixtures might work well, such as Pro-kolin. This is beef flavoured and is usually easier to give than Kaogel.
