Over grooming

Linda Dalrymple

Our cat is over grooming herself so there are bald patches on her hind legs and her flesh under back legs has gone we have had her checked oyt for parasites skin condition none present would the gel be a good option she is about 15 years old and healthy otherwise

  • Non-Executive Director

It is always important to continue with good flea control on cats like this. Even though fleas might well not be the cause, she might well be unusually sensitive to flea bites and if a flea appears, she would then react excessively to a single bite. Having said that, usually the best way to help cats like this is through some sort of de-stressing therapy. It is usually the sort of nervy, anxious cats which are prone to this over-grooming. I do think that they are probably the cats which over-react to feeling a bit itchy, hence the parasite control is so important.) It is widely felt that the most stressful thing to a cat is other cats. If you have another cat in your house, or outside, then the affected cat should be given opportunity to feel safe and secure on its own as much as possible. After that, Kalm Aid can be a help, along with a number of other products. A Feliway diffuser is often found to be the most effective thing to try, but to some extent it is trial and error.

Does it taste

Mrs j m rix

Will the cat accept the taste

  • Non-Executive Director

Only your cat knows this - individuals vary and some will eat it happily, for others there is no chance! You can only try it and see. Ideally offer it with a small amount of a tasty treat, when your cat is hungry (do not leave dried food down all the time, or your cat will never be hungry).

How to administer

My name is Emma and I have a 4 year old staff called alfie,. He is a lovely dog but can get excited and shakes and whines. Would this product help to calm him a little so I can progress in our training? Also do you put the drops into water?

  • Non-Executive Director

This product will often take the edge off a dog's anxiety and so is worth trying for your Staffie. The drops are best added to food, not water, because you want to make sure that they are all taken and some is not left behind. If your dog does not finish all of the food given, then the drops should be added to a small treat which will be consumed completely.

Would the gel be fine for an 18yr old cat?

Hi there,
I'm about to move to Scotland with my partner from Sussex (about an 8 hour drive). I'm considering taking my 18 year old cat, but he only knows car journeys as a trip to the vet and that unnerves him. The other option is to leave him with my parents where we currently reside. He has a very strong bond with me, so either decision will be tough!

If I was to take him with me, would this product be ok for an elderly cat (he's in great health and had a clear blood test last year)?

Also, is there any difference in the 50ml cat gel compared to the 250ml?

Many thanks.

  • PHP Developer

Yes it is perfectly suitable for use on an 18 year old cat. The 250ml liquid and 50ml gel are very similar although the gel is easier to administer. You can offer to your cat on your finger or put it on their paw so they can lick it off. The liquid needs to be mixed with their food. I would suggest the gel so you can give to your cat 1 or 2 hours before you are actually going to leave the house without the need to change their feeding time.

Dog sedation

my westie is 13 and had 2 teeth and 1 eye removed last year for medical reasons.
since then go near her to cut or groom her she tries to bite me every time. how can I calm or partially sedate her so I can groom her with no fear of being bitten. we have used a muzzle with some success but you can not do her head properly.

  • Non-Executive Director

Kalm Aid may help with this, but it is unlikely to be a perfect answer. It might be that you can gain her confidence again with a lot of time and effort and careful handling, but at her age it is difficult. Possibly you could get some good advice from so I would try them. Stronger sedatives are prescription only, so your vet would need to help.
