Description

Some bitches which have been spayed will leak urine when they are asleep or at rest. This condition, which can start to happen a few years later, is partly due to the different hormone levels found. Incurin contains a low dose of Estriol, an oestrogen which acts on the bladder and urethra to help prevent urine leaking ("sphincter mechanism incontinence"). Usually the dose is one tablet per day, or a maximum of 2 daily. Many bitches show a good response and after a period of time, the dose can be reduced, or given on alternate days. Medication is usually required lifelong.

55 Helped with bladder incontinence
Verified Purchase

By on 14 April 2024

After my female dog was spayed, she had on going on & off bladder incontinence. This has helped alot and stopped that. Ive not noticed any side effects, after 4months of being on meds. The vet prescribed it, but we get it from viovet. As viovet is much cheaper and the customer service is great. Super easy to send your prescription over and to get the meds. Saves you money for long term meds too. Highly recommend viovet.

Intermittant success. Tried to contact your support email but unsuccessful. Only wanted to know of anything preferably herbal which can solve light incontinence. Otherwise, excellent service from Viovet. Thank you

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Incurin 1mg Tablets for Dogs, including answers from our team.

Increases "attractiveness"?

Stephanie

Is this drug likely to affect the scent that the treated dog gives off, as in to make other dogs receptive to the increase in oestrogen, or their behaviour as such?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication states the following regarding adverse events, which should answer your query:
Oestrogenic effects such as swollen vulva, swollen mammary glands and/or attractiveness to males and vomiting have been observed at the highest recommended dose of 2 mg per dog. The incidence is about 5-9 %. These effects are reversible after lowering the dose.

Raised liver enzyme

Denise

Is this tablet safe to use with raised liver enzymes

  • VioVet Staff

Raised liver enzymes means there is ongoing liver cell damage in your pet. The only contraindications of this product as per the datasheet are as follows:
Do not use in intact bitches, as the efficacy has only been established
in ovariohysterectomised bitches. Animals showing a polyuria-polydipsia
should not be treated with Incurin. The use of Incurin is
contraindicated during pregnancy, lactation and in animals younger than 1
year.

Liver damage is not a specific contraindication. However the liver processes most medications and so if the damage is severe then the dose may need altering. I recommend discussing this with your vet to be certain the medication is appropriate.

How long?

Domino

Hello, how long does it take Incurin to work? My dog is on day 4 and not really seeing an improvement yet. Does it sometimes take a bit to kick in?

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on what your vet is treating and why, we recommend discussing this further with them. The doseage can be increased or decreased depending on how your dog responds to initial therapy.

Can I use incurin on my male dog

Irene

Can I use incurin for my male dog and does it cause him to drink more water

  • VioVet Staff

Incurin is licensed for use in female dogs but can be used off license for incontinence in male dogs. The only listed side effects in the data sheet are as follows:

Oestrogenic effects such as swollen vulva, swollen mammary glands and/or
attractiveness to males and vomiting have been observed at the highest
recommended dose of 2 mg per dog. The incidence is about 5-9 %. These
effects are reversible after lowering the dose. In rare cases vaginal
bleeding occurred. In rare cases development of alopecia has also been
observed.

Drinking more is not a listed side effect. I strongly advise you contact your vet for advice on what could be causing this. You should only be giving incurin to your dog alongside their recommendation anyway.

Incontinent dog

Jane

Can this product be used for my 14 year old aging MALE dog??

  • VioVet Staff

This medication is used to treat incontinence in dogs. It's main use is for USMI in spayed bitches but it can be used off license effectively in male dogs too. It is a prescription only medication so you will need to contact your vet for a written prescription to purchase it with us. It should only be used alongside veterinary guidance.

Does Incurin cause irratation

Julie

My dog has been on Incurin for about 3 weeks and has become very itchy. She is constantly nibbling at herself all over and has a rash at the topo of her leg/belly.

  • VioVet Staff

Theoretically any medication can result in some sort of adverse reaction and an itchy skin is what sometimes happens. Having said that, there are a huge number of dogs which develop itchy skins, often at this time of year, and they are not on Incurin or anything else. The sensible thing would be to asky your vet if it would be safe to stop the Incurin and see what happens for a week or two. My feeling is that there is a high chance that the Incurin is nothing to do with it, but if the two things started at the same time, one has to be suspicious of the Incurin. A more likely reason would be an allergy to fleas or something. Are you treating for fleas? Have you seen any at all? Have you looked carefully(and for flea droppings in the coat)? It could be the Incurin but more likely something else. Either way, you need to find out what it is.
