55 It's definitely helping

My cat has had an insatiable appetite since a bout of inappetence a few years ago. I couldn't take the constant begging any longer. After appointing a behaviourist, one suggestion was trying Metabolic food in conjunction with a timed feeder. The feeder was already helping. But more improvement came with the introduction of the food. Long may it last!

This is great for keeping my cat’s weight down. He has eating issues due to a bad start in life (he is a rescue cat) and I can control the portion and know it is helping his metabolism

My cats love this kibble and it definitely helped them lose weight. The only issue I have with it is they love it so much I have to steel myself at their pitiful cries that they're staving!

Metabolic weight control dry food

Rosalind Barnes

  • VioVet customer since 2013
  • From: , United Kingdom

The most recent bag of this food has much smaller pieces of food in comparison to our usual Bags - also the word “advanced” Has been removed from its title - has the formula changed? It is also cheaper to buy - which has made me worry that I have not bought the correct food.

  • VioVet Staff

Hello Rosalind,

Thank you for your question.

After checking with the manufacturer I can confirm that there have been no ingredient changes with this diet.

The changes that you have noticed on this occasion relate to a packaging update which Hill's have done across the Hill's Prescription Diet range and also their new kibble shape which again has been brought into most of their kibbles across the Hill's diets.

The old style packaging with 'Advanced Weight Solution' printed on it are no longer available and so the new packaging you have received will be the only one going forward; the new packaging says 'Weight Management'.

Hope this helps.

Metabolic dry food

Roughly how many meals will 1kg provide. My cat is 6kg should be 5kg

  • VioVet Staff

Your cat will need to be fed 55-60g of this food each day (based on their target weight), so a 1kg bag will last 16-18 days.

Metabolic diet

Would this diet be suitable for a cat who is prone to urinary tract infections and currently has royal canin s/o index wet pouches?

  • VioVet Staff

The answer is it might be! This depends on why your cat is prone to urinary tract infections. Some cats are prone to urinary tract disease if they are fed the standard dry foods, but do much better on a diet such as the one you mention. Wet foods as a whole are probably better for cats like this. Overweight cats are also prone to urinary problems, and getting weight off them can be very difficult. The metabolic diet is good for weight control and the moist version is quite good at controlling urinary problems in some cats. You might have to try it out in order to be sure. As a long-term diet, the Hills might be a better solution, so I would be tempted to try it out, but you should discuss this with your own vet first who knows your individual cat.

Wet and dry

l.t

can my cat be fed wet or dry metabolic or does it have to be a mix of both?

  • VioVet Staff

It is acceptable to give either wet, dry or a mixture of both. It is more natural for cats to eat moist, not dry food and might be slightly more beneficial for their kidney function. However, for many cats this does not seem to make any difference and they seem to do just as well on any combination. Dry can be beneficial for their teeth, which is worth bearing in mind.
