If you are anything like my boyfriend and I you spend far too much time discussing the consistency of your staffs stools. Well, since we changed to this food our staff (who has a sensitive stomach and used to get loose stool issues a lot) has been laying some textbook cables! She’s also pancreatic yet this food is still ok even though supposedly she’s supposed to be on a low fat diet.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Hill's Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome Dry Dog Food with Chicken, including answers from our team.

Elderly dog with few teeth

Alison Rosser

Can this food be softened for my old dog with few teeth. And how big is each piece?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, as long as the food is given shortly after adding water then it is safe to be given softened. It will deteriorate quicker once softened so you should not leave wet food out for a long period of time or you risk mould contamination occuring.

Can you mix the wet and dry food and if so what is the ratio for a 10kg dog. Also could you please advise about measuring dry food - do you use hills cup for i/d food as there isn't a specific measure for this type of food

Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Yes the wet and dry food can be mixed. The feeding guide for this when mixing the Hills Gastrointestinal Biome Stew with the Adult Dry Dog food is pasted below. Measuring the dry food is best done using a scales if you have one:

Is this suitable for everyday use?

Charlie

Hi
My 2 elderly dogs are settled on Hills Prescription Gastrointestinal dried food and I ordered this version in error. Will it be OK to give them this anyway?
Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this diet is very similar to the original Hills I/D, it additionally contains ActivBiome+ to actively promote
regular healthy stools and help reduce the risk of future episodes. If you are using the diet to support intestinal issues then you should be fine to use the Biome version instead.
Without knowing the exact condition your dog has though it is hard to be 100% certain. I advise discussing this with your vet or ringing the Hills Nutrition Helpline for further advice.

Is Prescription needed?

Sakib

Can you please let me know if I have to provide a Prescription in order to get this?

I need this to be delivered in Naples, FL, USA

  • VioVet Staff

You do not need to provide a written prescription from your vet to purchase from the Hills Veterinary Prescription Diet Range, however you should only use these diets alongside your Veterinarians advice. Some of the diets within the range are not appropriate for certain health conditions.

Is this suitable for dog with IBD

Yvonne Tillyard

  • VioVet customer since 2007
  • From: Avon , United Kingdom

I have a 3 year old Golden Retriever with inflammatory bowel disease and currently has Purina HA dry food. This suits her but she seems to lack energy and gets tired easily. She does have regular meds to control her condition but still has outbreaks of diarrhoea and upset stomach. My new vet has suggested Hills Biome as a possible suitable food and I would like to ask if you would recommend it as suitable for my dog. I would really appreciate your advice

  • VioVet Staff

Hills Gastrointestinal Biome is specifically aimed at dogs who have intestinal problems and can help with conditions such as IBD. If you are currently on Purina HA and this is working well then I would not switch however. Purina HA contains hydrolysed protein which is specially formulated so that it cannot set off a reaction in a dog with IBD. This Hills diet will have unhydrolysed proteins which could set off your dog's IBD.
If you would like specific advice on other products to use with IBD then please contact our team on [email protected].
