Hexarinse

Linda Hutt

Mollie has another mild dose of gingivitis and I have just received a bottle of hexarinse. I took her to the vet and he gave her a steroid injection to try to curb this problem. He said to use the mouthwash but trying to get it in her mouth is very hard. Can I put it in her water or cat milk and if so how much please? Thanks Lyn

  • VioVet Staff

I think you could add it to her drinking water at a diluition of 1ml Hexarinse to 100mls water. I would not recommend any more concentrated than that. However it will not be nearly as effective as applying a little directly into the mouth. That can indeed be very difficult with cats, but that is a better way of using it. I suggest you try to persevere if you can.

How is hexarinse administered please

  • VioVet Staff

With difficulty if you have a non-cooperative pet, but with surprising ease with practice on most pets. You have to lift the top lip at the side of the mouth and gently squirt a small amount onto the side of the teeth beneath, then repeat on the other side. Then movement of the tongue and lips will distribute the solution around the mouth quite well before it is gradually swashed away by saliva and swallowed. If done regularly this does make a difference. If you can manage to brush the teeth a bit with a soft toothbrush first, it is even better, though not many people can. Just the outer surfaces of the upper teeth along the sides of the jaw are most important. Just the Hexarinse alone will help though.

Sore mouth

VioVet Visitor

My cat is 15 & recently had 6 teeth removed and her remaining teeth cleaned. She had a course of capsules as she has/had gingivitis. She has been fine but now 5 weeks later, she is starting to struggle to eat again as it must have come back. Would this product help or can you please recommend anything else. Thanks Lyn

This product could certainly help, but can be difficult to use if the mouth is sore. Ideally the teeth should be physically cleaned too. This can be achieved by brushing gently with a soft toothbrush if your cat will tolerate that, but again it is difficult. Some cats will chew up items of food to mechanically clean the teeth and this works well if they will (dried strips of meat intended as dog treats are good for this) but again your cat may not be interested/able. The worst thing is to just eat foods which leave a thin coating of food residue on the teeth afterwards, which just feeds the bacteria in the mouth and results in a high population and sore gums. Even crunchy biscuits leave a film of crumbs/fine particles mixed with saliva on the teeth. Chewy foods are much better if your cat will eat them as they leave no residue.
