Explained - Nutraceuticals & the Oatinol® Delivery System™

Nutraceuticals are products derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to their basic nutritional value.

Betaine

Helps preserve the availability of essential amino acids methionine and choline for use within the body.

Collagen Matrix

Possesses great tensile strength and provides the framework that gives tissues their firmness and resilience. It is essential for connecting and supporting the bones, tendons, muscles and cartilage.

Curcumin

An active ingredient of the spice, turmeric. It is a natural and powerful antioxidant and supports the normal anti-inflammatory action of the body.

Glucosamine (Vegetable Source)

Gives cartilage its structure and shock absorbing qualities. It is involved in the formation of cartilage, tendons, skin, bone and ligaments.

Glutamic Acid

A natural flavour enhancer and an important nutritional support for natural gut health during times of stress.

Hyaluronic Acid (Vegetable Source)

Involved in the structural formation of cartilage and helps to cushion and lubricate the joints.

Manganese (Protected)

Essential for the production of chondroitin sulphate to aid healthy movement and the utilisation of fats and carbohydrates for energy.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

Essential for the manufacture of collagen and a source of sulphur, which helps to form cross links with other molecules that maintain the strength and integrity of connective tissues.

Oligosaccharides (Mannan) (Prebiotic)

Support the immune system by maintaining naturally high levels of macrophage activity to block harmful organisms, such as some unnatural moulds and fungi prevalent in hay, being absorbed into the bloodstream.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids provide a daily source of essential fat components, providing the correct dietary balance with pro-inflammatory omega 6. Omega 3's are also found in large concentrations in spermatozoa and are essential for maintaining cell wall integrity and preventing moisture/oil loss from the skin.

Piperine Black Pepper Extract

Supports the retention in the metabolism of some active nutraceuticals e.g. curcumin.

Vitamin C

Essential for the production of collagen in the body that forms the matrix of connective tissues in mammals. It directly affects the level of tissue growth and development and the maintenance of the body's immune system.

Contains the Oatinol® Delivery System For all of the above active ingredients to be utilised, they have to be absorbed from the horses’ digestive tract. Oatinol supplies natural antioxidants, polar lipids, beta glucans and galactolipid emulsifiers, required to maintain gut cell integrity, maintain the lining of the gut, support the immune system and aid the absorption of active ingredients, vitamins and trace elements.

Active Ingredient Why we use it
Oatinol - Galactolipid Natural Emulsifiers Galactolipids are a combination of sugar and fat molecules that help establish the perfect medium for enzyme activity in the gut to absorb feed components
Oatinol - Natural
Tocotrienol Antioxidants
Tocotrienol antioxidants are found naturally in oat bran. This tocotrienol form of vitamin E is 40 to 60 times more readily recycled in membrane systems and supports tissue integrity.
Oatinol - Oat Derived
Beta Glucans
Beta glucans provide nourishment for beneficial fibre degrading microbes and helps maintain a high level of natural immunity.
Oatinol - Polar Lipids Polar lipids are found in high concentrations in cell membranes and are essential for tissue integrity and the controlled passage of materials into and out of cells.

Love this product. My horse does not do well with powdered supplements, I find most is wasted and left at the bottom of her bowl. This pelleted joint product she will eat on its own. Good price, no waste

This seems to really help my older cob. But GWF now only supply in a 3kg bag rather than 5kg tub. I suppose this is eco friendly packaging but now it’s not rodent proof and it works out £2/kg more expensive.

Is the GWF joint supplement ok to be fed to lamanetics?

Kylie

I have a 17 year old who even though hasn't had any signs of laminitus for the last few years he is prone to it and has to be managed carefully he is now showing early signs of artheritis so am I ok to feed him the GWF?

  • VioVet Staff

It should be fine to give this supplement and it might well help with symptoms of arthritis, some people report good results, some are not so sure.

Improve Arthritis

amie-sian

will this help improve mild arthritis in stifles ?

  • VioVet Staff

The hope is that it will do exactly that. In practice it does often seem to reduce the symptoms of stiffness and discomfort from joints with arthritis, but it is not an absolutely consistent thing. Some horses appear to improve while others show no obvious benefit. This product and similar supplements do sell in large quantities and remain very popular, so the anecdotal evidence is that they do work. They are not licensed medicines so there is no scientific proof of their effect yet.

Do you still need to feed a balancer with this?

Karen Richards

  • VioVet customer since 2014
  • From: Sir Gaerfyrddin, United Kingdom

I've been feeding this for a while now and all is good, I feed it with hifi and fibre beet, just been wondering if I should be feeding a balancer ae well???

  • VioVet Staff

A balancer is a low-intake, concentrated source of essential protein, vitamins, and minerals, which is designed for all classes of horses when additional calories are not required. Feed balancers are really important if you are not feeding the recommended volume of feed to your horse, as they may not be getting all of the specific nutrients that they need. A lot of balancers contain biotin, amongst other products, which help to improve the quality of the hooves, skin and coat. They can also contain prebiotics and probiotics to help the horse to properly utilise the feed that they are already getting.

Balancers are especially important for the younger, veteran or active horse, as they require a full spectrum of readily-available vitamins and minerals which are so important for maintaining a happy, healthy horse.

Is this ok for horse to compete on?

  • VioVet Staff

This product does not contain any banned substances and so is perfectly acceptable to give to competition horses.

Does this help with bone spavin

sharon

I use Newmarket joint supplement to help with my horse who has mild bone spavin, it doesn't work as good as it use too. Will this product help better than the Newmarket supplement

  • VioVet Staff

The GWF product has a much wider range of ingredients, though a lower concentration of one key ingredient. Basically they are different products and it is difficult to know which one would give the best results in your horse because all horses vary. Some seem to respond better to one product than another and this varies and is difficult to predict. If you are finding that the results presently are disappointing, then it makes sense to try a different type of product and see how it goes. I would try the GWF one.
