55 Good grooming tool

Teddie my rescue dog has lifelong skin issues so helping keep her short dense coat in good order is important. I have a large furminator which I had for my old Irish Wolf Hound and so have purchased the small one for teddie - although expensive certainly does a good job in removing the under hair - would stress best used as part of the overall grooming care - say once a week in shedding time and once every two weeks other times. General brushing every day.

35 Strange on Chow Chow Fur

Very strange to use on my 4 month old Chow Chow pup, felt like I was ripping her fur out. Will wait till winter to see when she starts shedding to try again. Not much use for now as I stick with the slicker brush.

55 Believe the hype!

I had heard huge rave reviews but was always turned off by the price, however the ridiculous amount of fur my JRT is shedding (and no other brushes making much of a difference) finally convinced me to give the furminator a try. Believe the hype folks, its great!

At the present time the dogs are at the end of their winter shedding. Will discover the benefit of this tool when the warm weather arrives. One bitch in particular has a very dense coat, so that is when the challenge will be. Unable to give rating at this time

Suitable for sensitive pointer?

Is a Furminator suitable for a very sensitive English pointer with no undercoat? The moulting short hair is everywhere!
Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

If your dog isn't keen on being groomed or has sensitive skin, it might be worth trying some other grooming aids before resorting to the Furminator. Given the short coat, a rubber grooming mitt may be more easily accepted as it will feel like being petted/massaged. Something like this Rubber Glove For Short Coats may be ideal, and it is also easy to clean after use.

The Furminator for short hair would be suitable for your dog's coat but you would just need to make sure that you introduce her to it slowly. I personally also avoid their lower legs and take extra care around bony bits as there is less fur between the teeth and skin. If you can teach her to be comfortable with it, the Furminator would be a really useful tool to have. I hope this helps!

I have a jack Russell smooth hair but long does it take of top hair as well as underneath. Like the men's clippers

  • VioVet Staff

The FURminator is used to remove the loose undercoat to stop it becoming matted and tangled with the top coat. It does not cut or damage the top coat when used.

is furminator suitable for wire haired fox terrier

  • VioVet Staff

It is suitable for a Wire Haired Fox Terrier. You will need to choose the correct size relating to the individual dog. It seems that they are usually under 10kg in weight so the Small Dog Furminator should be the best option. It all depends on whether to go for the long or short haired Furminator. If their hair is longer that 2 inches (5cm) then choose the Small Dog Long Hair version.
