Description

FRONTLINE Spray is the original form of the popular flea treatment. FRONTLINE is usually used as FRONTLINE Spot On, but there are occasions when applying as a spray is more suitable. This can be more difficult to apply, but in some situations is more effective, and there is a longer activation of the treatment. FRONTLINE Spray is licensed for use in both cats and dogs — it should not be used on rabbits.

Was recommended this by our vet as my dog keeps picking up our chicken mites, and was told this would help keep them at bay. It did seem to help and would use again.

Frontline spray works really well for mites on cats, dogs, & our alpacas. Worth every penny. On the cat I spray it onto a gloved hand and work through the coat - same on ears of other animals.

The spray makes such a loud whoosh when it comes out that both cats fled for their lives out of the cat flap. Label suggests putting it on a glove and administering that way however,
each whooosh would send them scarpering. One of my cats has long hair and it would be impossible to get it on his skin as directed on the label. It also says to put it on the entire body, including their feet. Most cats don't like their feet rubbed, mine certainly do not. In my case, it was a complete waste of money although it would probably be fine for dogs.

Side effects

Jo

Does this spray have side effects if licked by the pet?

  • VioVet Staff

The product should not be ingested and side effects are possible if this occurs. These are as following as per the datasheet. If any occur then it is important you contact your local vet to see if treatment is required:
If licking occurs, a brief period of hypersalivation may be observed due mainly to the nature of the carrier. Among the extremely rare suspected adverse reactions, transient cutaneous reactions erythema, pruritus or alopecia have been reported after use. Exceptionally, hypersalivation, reversible neurological signs (hyperaesthesia, depression, nervous signs), vomiting or respiratory signs have been observed after use. Do not overdose.

Seasonal canine disease

Helen Stone

We walk our Labrador dogs in Sandringham Estate where there has been the first case for over two years of the above disease. Want to use a topical mite spray prior to walking. Is this the best product?
Thank you

  • VioVet Staff

Vets aren't exactly sure what causes Seasonal Canine Illness or Disease (SCI/SCD) in dogs currently. However the most likely theory is an association with harvest mites as many dogs were infested with them upon diagnosis. Harvest mites normally are completely harmless, feeding on dead skin, but it is worth preventing against them if you are concerned.

Fipronil based sprays will do this and Frontline spray is a good example of an appropriate spray. It should be sprayed onto affected areas that come into contact with the mites. These can be any area that contacts the ground/grass:
- The feet, particularly inbetween the toes
- The underside of the belly
- The neck/back of the ears and armpits can sometimes be affected

Frontline spray is not licensed to kill harvest mites but it's ingredient fipronil has been proven to do this off license.

Is this the spray recommended for use in feather mites (horses)
