Directions For Use

Treating a flea infestation with FRONTLINE

Step 1 - Treat all dogs and cats with FRONTLINE® Spot On

Treat all dogs and cats in the household monthly for a minimum of 3 consecutive months. Don’t forget to worm them for tapeworms too!

Step 2 - Wash all bedding above 60°C

If pets are heavily infested, bedding should be destroyed. Otherwise wash bedding above 60°C and spray with FRONTLINE® HomeGard afterwards. Once dry, small items that cannot be washed or sprayed (e.g. childrens soft toys), can be bagged and placed in the freezer for 5 days to kill fleas.

Step 3 - Remove all pets and children from the area

Fish are also susceptible to the effects of flea sprays so make sure that tanks are covered to make them airtight and pumps are switched off during treatment and until after the room has been aired. Pet feeders and water bowls should also be removed.

Step 4 - Vacuum the whole house

Vacuum the house thoroughly, including the edge of rooms and down crevices by the skirting boards, paying particular attention to areas where pets frequent. Move furniture to vacuum the entire carpet. Flea larvae will crawl away from light and hide in shaded areas underneath furniture. Vacuum all upholstery, especially where pets tend to lie. Spray the inside of the vacuum dust bag or cylinder to kill any eggs or larvae picked up by the vacuum. Always dispose of the vacuum contents outside to stop fleas hatching indoors.

Step 5 - Spray with FRONTLINE® HomeGard

Treat one room at a time. Close all windows and doors. Hold the can 50cm (knee height) above the surfaces to be treated. Start at one side of the room, point nozzle at the surface to be treated and spray lightly over the area to be covered. Do not wet the areas and use only lightly on glossy or wooden surfaces to avoid spotting. Use in ALL areas where pets have been. When treating each room make sure to spray along skirting boards, in any cracks and crevices, all furniture (including sofas, rugs, beds), all carpets (including areas under furniture)pet beds and bedding, in the car (seats, boot and floor/carpet). It is recommended to do a patch test prior to use on delicate fabrics.

Step 6 - Leave room for 30 minutes

Each room should be left for 30 minutes before airing. After 30 minutes, open doors and windows until areas are dry. Once dry, vacuum a second time to eliminate fleas which were encouraged to emerge.

Step 7 - Continue to vacuum daily

Adult fleas may be seen for several weeks after treatment as they emerge from their pupae (cocoons). It is not possible for any product to kill fleas while in the cocoon. Continue to vacuum daily for the next 7-10 days as the vibrations will stimulate the fleas to emerge from the cocoons and be killed by FRONTLINE HomeGard.

I have a 13year old Maltese Poodle who has always "cleaned" / licked his paws after going outside. Would the Flea spray get onto his paws when coming into he house and could this affect him?

  • Website Content Developer

Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for your question.

You need to ensure treated areas are well ventilated afterwards, and do not re-enter them for a minimum of 30 mins post-treatment or until treated surfaces/fabrics are dry. After this time, it will be fine for your Poodle to enter.

I hope this helps.

Is the homegard household spray effective on ticks/mites too? Thank you.

  • Website Content Developer

Thank you for your question.

This is not effective against ticks; you will need the Frontline Spot On or a tick remover for ticks. The product is effective against dust mites and fleas and also their eggs.

Would this spray also eradicate carpet beetles?

8th Sep 2017
Pamela burrows

I am slowly getting rid of the beetles by daily hoovering and spraying a powder every so often, but I need something to spray between the floor boards and wondered if this would be successful.

  • Website Content Developer

Hi Pamela,

This can be sprayed in all areas, including carpets, cracks and crevices in flooring and even animal bedding.
