Description

FRONTLINE Combo is the prescription-only form of FRONTLINE Spot On, the most popular Flea and Tick treatment available. Combo has an extra ingredient which is particularly helpful for flea control if you forget to re-apply FRONTLINE as frequently as you should. The extra ingredient has a more persistent action on the skin and coat of dogs and cats.

This additional ingredient does not kill fleas, but in effect it sterilizes female fleas so that they cannot breed. Each individual flea does not live for long anyway, so that preventing them breeding can be an effective form of control in itself.

Just like frontline Spot On, Frontline Combo is supplied in small pipettes which are emptied onto the back of the neck of the cat or dog to be treated.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding FRONTLINE Combo Spot On for Dogs & Cats, including answers from our team.

Prescription only?

Rachael Murrell

  • VioVet customer since 2011
  • From: Suffolk, United Kingdom

I want to purchase this product but it lets me go to checkout but doesn’t ask me for prescription? Do I have to do that after? My vet will charge me for a prescription!! Thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Frontline Combo is a POM-V prescription only medication. I recommend using Frontline Plus instead, this is exactly the same except that it can be purchased over the counter without prescription.

Why prescription for this product?

Calvin Downes

Why does Combo require a prescription and Plus doesn't? My understanding is that they are the same product just labelled for different areas of the world.

  • VioVet Staff

Yes Frontline Plus and Combo have exactly the same active ingredients. The only difference is that Frontline Plus is licensed NFA-VPS and so can be sold over the counter whilst combo is licensed POM-V and requires a prescription. This is due to the way in which the products were licensed initially.

Suitable for puppies

Lucianne

Are these okay for puppies?

  • VioVet Staff

Frontline Combo requires a prescription from your vet to purchase, so they will prescribe the pipettes for your puppies if they are suitable. The data sheet states that they are intended for puppies over 8 weeks of age and/or weighing over 2 kg. If you can send us the prescription, we would be able to supply you with Frontline Combo for your puppies.

You can buy standard Frontline Spot On without a prescription, and the same guidelines for use in puppies apply. You don't need a prescription for the standard Frontline, but you will need to provide a few simple details about the group being treated before we can supply them. You will be prompted to do this after you have completed the order, and it should only take a minute or two. Feel free to ring our customer services if you are unsure of anything.

Frontline spot-on and prescription Frontline

Julia Barnes

What is the difference between Frontline spot-on and prescription Frontline?

  • VioVet Staff

Frontline Spot-on

  • This contains one ingredient.
  • It coats the skin and hair after being applied and kills off fleas.
  • It persists on the coat even if the animal swims or is shampooed, as long as there is at least a 24 hour gap before and after applying the Frontline.

Prescription Frontline

  • This contains 2 ingredients.
  • The first one is exactly the same as in normal Spot-on.
  • The second one also coats the skin and coat, but does not kill fleas at all. Instead it sterilises fleas, so that they cannot breed.
  • The idea of it is that it persists longer on the coat than the killing ingredient.
  • Hence if people do not re-apply the frontline as often as they should, then the killing ingredient will no longer be effective (especially on animals at the top of the weight range of the product used). The other ingredient works for about twice as long as the main ingredient. The idea behind this is that if fleas cannot breed, you only get very small numbers of them and they are unlikely to be noticed or do any harm.

Re-applying Frontline

Amanda Grimshaw

How soon to re-apply Frontline? I can still see fleas!

  • VioVet Staff

As long as you applied the Frontline properly, it will be killing off the fleas. They take about 24 hours to die. While they are dying, they are very easy to spot on the animal. Healthy fleas are more difficult to see, because they hide better. As fleas are dying and dropping off, more "new" fleas are jumping on your cat from the environment. This is a very bad year for fleas. Most of the flea population affecting your cat is not on your cat, but is actually in carpets and nooks and crannies between floor boards etc. They replenish the fleas on your cat all the time.

You should wait 4 weeks between applications on your cat, but you should vacuum all carpets regularly and use "RIP Fleas" or something similar around the house. It still takes quite a few weeks for most people to get rid of all the fleas.
