Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Farnam Red Cell for Horses, including answers from our team.
Is it true that red cell is no longer used in racing yards as the ingredients were being too close to some of the non racing ingredients?i worked in a big stable and always praised the stuff.if this is true, isn’t there a new product out?
Red Cell contains Cobalt which given at high levels can enhance performance in racehorses and may have welfare implications. For this reason there is now implementation of a raceday cobalt threshold. This threshold has been determined to permit the use of supplements that contain low levels of cobalt (such as Vitamin B12). However, as these supplements would not be considered normal feed and water, they must not be administered on raceday in accordance with the usual Rules of Racing.
I have a vetern pony lacking energy, will this help him?
Yes, this product should help him. It can be used in horses competing at 2 fluid ounces daily and those not competing at 1 fluid ounce daily. The theory is that it boosts energy levels and aids quicker recovery after exercise. If your veteran pony has become more lethargic than normal recently it might be worth getting your vet to do a cushings blood test if you haven't already- a common cause of lethargy in older horses.
Would i still need to give my horse electrolytes along side this ? is it ok to use with feedback settlex ? (my horse produces excess gastric acid ) thanks Rita
This is given for different reasons than electrolytes. Farnam Red Cell is best given all the time, electrolytes are normally only needed after heavy exercise (or even minimal exercise on a hot day if it results in a lot of sweating). They can both be given along with Settlex.
