Euro Rep Reptile Basking Lights

  • Screw Fit » 60w £5.73

Use Euro Rep Basking Lights to create a basking area of high, localised heat. A reptile basking light will provide an intense beam of light and heat which allows the animal to quickly warm itself. The lamp is designed to concentrate the heat in a small local area and is not designed to heat the whole vivarium. The lamp wattage should be chosen to match the appropriately rated holder, the size of cage, type of animal being heated and the temperature required.

Hi just want to know if this lamp has everything a tortoise needs? Ie heat and light rays?

No this is not really intended to do that. You will need a separate UV lamp (to help with vitamin D status) and usually a separate, background heat source. If your tortoise is going to spend sunny days out on the lawn, then the UV lamp is not so important. Also if the room is kept warm and this is not a tropical tortoise, then the heat source might not be needed, so you could get away with just a basking lamp, but this would not be the ideal set-up.

Hi I am not sure what watts I need for my 2 horsefield tortoises

This depends partly on other factors in your setup. Personally I prefer to use a lowish wattage basking lamp, but ensure that the temperature of the vivarium well away from the lamp is close to the ideal for the species. Then if you place a small rock under the lamp and leave it there for an hour or more (no tortoise present) it should feel distinctly warmer than a rock away from the lamp, but not uncomfortably hot. You can always adjust the heat supplied to the basking area by raising or lowering the lamp if you have adequate height available. If in doubt, choose a low watt basking lamp. You can always lower it if you find it is not providing enough heat.
