Equimins Biotin 15 great for my horses hooves which crack and chip in the summer. He also has very little growth. Brilliant gets good growth and strength stops the problems of cracking and breaking too.

I have been using this for years on my two TB’s who were prone to abscesses. Fingers crossed that they continue not to have any since I started adding this to their meals.

This supplement is eaten well by my horse. I’m on the second tub having chosen it originally as an alternative to alfalfa based supplements which needed a large amount of scoops every day in my horses small feed. It has a lovely “banana” smell though I’m not sure why from looking at the ingredients. Hooves certainly in good condition now, will see if this continues over the summer.

Question re feeding amount

Willow Reavley

hi so it says "feeding recommendation for Biotin 15 is 2 level measures (25g) added daily to the horses feed which will provide 15 mg of biotin"

does that mean 2 level measures of 25g each (total 50g per day) will provide 15mg of biotin. the horse i am going to buy the supplement for needs 20-30mg of biotin per day as is very large so would i need to give her 50g x 2 or 25g x 2 to make the 15mg x 2 that would be required. i am doing the arithmetic to try to find the cheapest way for me to do this... wait to hear, thank you. the question i'm asking really is the size of the scoop - does 1 scoop contain 25g or 12.5g?

thanks
Willow

This means that each scoop will provide 7.5mg of biotin, the recommended amount of 2 scoops will provide 15mg total per day.
It is advised to contact the manufacturer before going outside of the recommended dosing level. This is because the supplement also contains Zinc, Methionine and Copper which you do not want to overdose with. Their contact details can be found here.
Unfortunately only the manufacturer can advise you whether increasing the dose will be safe or not.

Is this suitable for horses recovering from laminitis?

  • VioVet Staff

This product is fine for horses or ponies with laminitis and would be helpful. However Equimins Laminator might be even better. It contains higher levels of Biotin along with other ingredients designed to support the laminae in the hoof.
