Intestinal worms, whether Roundworms or Tapeworms, can pose a potentially serious health threat to your dogs if left untreated, so regular worming (every 3 months) is a necessity. In order to survive and multiply within the internal environment of your dog, worms will feed on the blood and content of the gut, with some laying dormant for up to a year within the muscle tissue, depositing an unprecedented number of eggs every day. This can lead to unpleasant symptoms of sickness, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and excessive bottom cleaning, however, sometimes worms are not accompanied by any diagnostic symptoms. Not only are worms a troublesome affliction for your dog, but they can be potentially hazardous for you if transferred through touching and licking, or picked up on your shoes and brought into the home. Drontal is an effective, economical worming treatment for dogs and cats, acting to safeguard your pet against the intrusion of harmful worms in the body, comprising an active ingredient that interferes with the energy metabolism of worms, causing them to die and pass out of the body. Drontal de-wormers are available in palatable flavours to encourage willing consumption and in a suitable form for puppies.
Please note, Drontal Puppy Suspension is only suitable for dogs up to one year old.

Even though the symptoms of worm infestation are not readily visible, most vets will advise you to de-worm your pet at least every 3 months. This will prevent a heavy worm burden building up, which could cause significant health problems for your dog or cat. Equally importantly, a regular Drontal dose will eradicate the one or two round worms (Toxocara species) often present in our pets but causing no apparent symptoms at all. These sub-clinical infections are important because these worms will be laying eggs which are passed out in the faeces and can remain dormant on the ground for long periods (or even on your pet's coat). If these microscopic eggs are accidentally ingested by children then they may start to develop inside the child's body. This development can result in microscopic worm larvae migrating into the brain, eye or other organs of the child with sometimes very serious consequences (visceral larva migrans). Regular worming with Drontal is therefore an important part of responsible pet ownership with regard to human health, besides being beneficial for your dog.Drontal dog wormer kills every type of intestinal worm that infects dogs in the UK. Drontal for dogs comes in flavoured tablets and are available in two sizes, with Drontal Plus for smaller dogs, which has a bone shaped tablet, and Drontal Plus XL for larger breeds. A single dose of Drontal is an effective treatment and dose not need to be repeated until more worms may have been picked up. The British Veterinary Association recommends treating adult dogs for worms every 3 months.
Drontal Cat comes in two sizes, with the standard tablet treating cats up to 4kg bodyweight, and Drontal Cat XL treating larger cats up to 6kg in weight. Drontal Cat is suitable for kittens over 6 weeks old.

A pale red suspension for oral administration. Each ml of suspension contains 5.0 mg pyrantel (as pyrantel embonate 14.4 mg) and 15 mg febantel. The product also contains 2.05 mg sodium benzoate (E211), 2.05 mg sodium propionate (E281) and 0.25 mg ponceau 4R (E124).
For the treatment of roundworm infections in puppies and young dogs up to one year of age caused by:
Ascarids | Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina |
---|---|
Hookworm | Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala |
Whipworm | Trichuris vulpis |
The dose is 1 ml suspension/kg body weight (equivalent to 14.4 mg/kg pyrantel embonate and 15 mg/kg febantel).
Administration is by the oral route. The product may be given directly to the animal or mixed with the feed. No special dietary measures are necessary.
Mix the product by inversion of the container before withdrawing the required dose.
Through intrauterine and transmammary infection, ascarid infestation may occur in dogs at a very early age. For some animals, especially in case of severe infections, elimination of ascarids may be incomplete, and a potential risk of infections to humans can not be excluded. Where epidemiologically appropriate, it is recommended that treatment should be started at 2 weeks of age and should be performed repeatedly at suitable intervals (for example every two weeks) until weaning. Otherwise treatment should be based upon confirmed infection, for example the results of faecal examinations.
This product is contra-indicated for pregnant and lactating bitches.
Do not use simultaneously with compounds containing piperazine.
Parasite resistance to any particular class of anthelmintic may develop following frequent repeated use of an anthelmintic of that class.
The safety of the product has not been assessed in puppies younger than 2 weeks and weighing less than 0.6 kg.
In very rare cases mild transient digestive tract signs (e.g., vomiting, diarrhoea) may occur.
The anthelmintic effects of both pyrantel (spastic paralysis) and piperazine (neuromuscular paralysis) may be antagonised when the two drugs are used together.
Doses of up to 5 times the therapeutic level of the product have been administered to puppies and young dogs without clinical signs of intolerance arising. At 10 times the recommended dose the first sign of intolerance – vomiting – was evident.
Wash hands after use.
Avoid direct contact with the skin and eyes.
In case of accidental spillage wash the affected area immediately with clean running water.

Shelf-life of the veterinary medicinal product as packaged for sale: 5 years.
Shelf-life after first opening the immediate packaging: 12 weeks.
White high density polyethylene bottles of 50 ml and 100 ml with a white polyethylene screw closure and colourless low density polyethylene adapter insert.
Devices supplied: 5ml transparent polypropylene syringe with rubber plunger.
Fixed combination of two anthelmintics: a tetrahydropyrimidine derivative, pyrantel (as the embonate) and a pro-benzimidazole, febantel. ATCvet code QP52AF02.
In this fixed combination product, the pyrantel and febantel act synergistically against nematodes (ascarids, hookworms and whipworms) of dogs. In particular, the spectrum of activity covers Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum and Trichuris vulpis. Published data are also available to confirm that Toxascaris leonina and Uncinaria stenocephala are also susceptible to this particular combination of actives.
Febantel, N-{2-[2,3-bis,(methoxycarbonyl)-guanidino]-5-(phenylthio) phenyl}-2-methoxyacetamide, is a pro-benzimidazole. Within the mammalian system febantel undergoes ring closure forming fenbendazole and oxfendazole. It is these chemical entities which exert the anthelmintic effect by inhibition of tubulin polymerisation. Formation of microtubules is thereby prevented, resulting in disruption to structures vital to the normal functioning of the helminth. Glucose uptake, in particular, is affected, leading to depletion in cell ATP. The parasite dies upon exhaustion of its energy reserves, which occurs 2-3 days later. Pyrantel, (E)-1,4,5,6-Tetrahydro-1-methyl-2-[2-(2-thienyl) vinyl] pyrimidine pamoate belongs to the tetrahydropyrimidine type. Its mode of action is to stimulate nicotinic cholinergic receptors inducing spastic paralysis and thereby allowing removal from the gastro-intestinal (GI) system by peristalsis.
Literature reports indicate after oral application of the recommended dose of 1 ml/kg bodyweight (corresponding to 14.4mg/kg pyrantel embonate and 15 mg/kg febantel) maximum serum concentrations for febantel were found between 1 and 6 hours with a Cmax of 0.019 mg/l two hours after dosing. As febantel, as a pro-drug, is metabolised to fenbendazole which is further converted to oxfendazole, also these metabolites were measured. Cmax of fenbendazole was 0.130 mg/l after 3 hours and Cmax of oxfendazole was 0.157 mg/l at about 5 hours after application.
The Cmax of pyrantel (measured as pyrantel base) was 0.084 mg/l 2.5 hours after application.

Easy to use, we put it in my labrador's dried food and he had no issues to eat it (although he eats anything). He has a very sensitive stomach but had no problem to digest it.
Our dog seemed to have a very bad worms infestation and it was effective in a few hours. We could see that his bum was not so itchy and he didn't seem to be starving anymore (the worms were eating all his food).
This is also much cheaper on this website than in the pet shop or most online website. I recommend this product and viovet.

My 8 week old kitten has been wormed for the first time and passed dead worms in her faeces. This is the first time she has been wormed. How often should I worm her now? Is it every 2 weeks until 12 weeks and then every 3 months. Just need to make sure all the worms she had are gone. Thanks.
Hello,
Thank you for your question.
Kittens need to be wormed every two weeks until twelve weeks of age, then monthly until six months of age. After six months all cats need to be wormed every three months for effective protection.
Hope this helps.

What is the difference between drontal and drontal plus please?
Drontal plus is intended for dogs and contains the active ingredients Pyrantel, Febantel and Praziquantel. It can be given to puppies from 2 weeks old and is effective against roundworm and tapeworm. Drontal oral suspension for puppies is intended for puppies up to 1 year old only. It contains Pyrantel and Febantel, is effective against roundworm and can be given from 2 weeks old.

Can I purchase a years supply of drontal or do they have a short expiry date?
Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for your question.
We recommend only buying six months' of treatment at a time as we cannot guarantee the expiry dates coming from our suppliers.
Thanks,
Laura
Can i used these tablets on 4 week old kittens
Drontal is not intended for use in kittens less than 6 weeks old so it would be best to wait for another 2 weeks before giving.

Can this product be used for treating lungworm in dogs. If not what other treatments do you have that can treat lungworm and be purchased without a vets prescription
No, Drontal is not effective against lungworm. For the dangerous type of lungworm that we are interested in treating, Angiostrongylus Vasorum, you would need a product such as Advocate or Milbemax which requires a prescription from your vet. Unfortunately there are not any non-prescriptions medications that treat this lungworm.

Drontal tablets make my cat sick and he brings the tablet back up. He suffers from roundworm picked up I suspect from drinking pond water from local school garden! Would appreciate any helpful suggestions.
If tablets are not agreeing with your cat then you could try a spot on. I would suggest Broadline which is effective against fleas, ticks, roundworms and tapeworms. It is the broadest spectrum product for cats and gives complete parasite control so you do not need to use anything else for flea treatments etc. It is applied once a month to the skin on the back of the neck.

Hi, I've just purchased the drontal XL as the flavour bone said it only treats up to 10k and our pup is just over 13k. However, looking at the dosage, am I right in thinking I only need to feed half a tablet for up to 17k?
Could I have also purchased the flavour bone (as it's much cheaper!) & increased the dosage to suit a 13k pup? If so, what would I increase the dosage to? Thanks, Helen
If you have the XL tablet then you are right- just feed half a tablet. If you prefer the flavour bone tablet in the future then you can buy these and give 1.5 tablets which will dose for 10-15kg.

My dogs weigh 18 KGS and 11 kgs what dosage should I give ? 2 and 1?
Hi Rosemarie,
Your 18kg dog will need 2 tablets and your 11kg dog will need 1.5 tablets to ensure they get enough of the active ingredient to be effective for their weight.
