How often should I worm my cat?

Research has shown that the majority of cats in the UK should be wormed monthly, based on their home environment and lifestyle such as scavenging, hunting, and spending time outdoors.* However, there may be situations where less frequent treatment is required and it’s best to speak to your vet about the most appropriate worming frequency for your cat.

Worming Made Easy

Spot on use for external application to the skin. The cat should be accurately weighed prior to treatment to ensure that the correct pipette size is used.

Remove one pipette from package. Hold pipette in upright position, twist and pull off cap and use the opposite end of the cap to break the seal.

Part the fur on the cat’s neck at the base of the skull until skin is visible. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze firmly several times to empty the contents directly onto the skin. Application on the base of the skull will minimise the ability of the cat to lick the product off.

Apply only to the skin surface and on intact skin. NOT to be administered by any other route.

STORAGE

Store in the original package to protect from moisture.

Store below 25°C

INGREDIENTS

0.7 ml pipette contains 60 mg praziquantel and 15 mg emodepside.

Pack sizes available: [Please insert pack sizes]

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Do not use in kittens under 8 weeks of age or weighing less than 0.5 kg.

Do not use in sick or debilitated animals.

Do not use in known cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

Shampooing or immersion of the animal in water directly after treatment may reduce efficacy of the product.

Avoid the treated cat or other cats in the household licking the site of application when it is wet.

Salivation (drooling) and vomiting may occur in very rare cases. Mild and transient neurological disorders such as ataxia (unsteady or stumbling gait) or tremor may occur in very rare cases. These effects are thought to occur as a result of the cat licking the application site immediately after treatment. In very rare cases following administration of the product transient alopecia (hair loss), pruritus (itchiness) and/or inflammation were observed at the application site.

Can be used during pregnancy and lactation.

Keep out of sight and reach of children and wash hands after use.

Order arrived as an empty envelope (flap had come unstuck) - when I emailed customer services they were super helpful & sent a new order right away. Very impressed. The wormer? It's a known brand & the one I got originally from my vet, so I guess it works fine! Easy to apply.

Great product to spot your cat with, especially if your cat cannot swallow, scared to give to your cat whole, or if it abandons crushed up worming tablets hidden in its food. Glad it exists!

Q & A

Ring worm

Lisa Davey

  • VioVet customer since 2017
  • From: Somerset, United Kingdom

Do the spot on treatments cover ring worm?

  • VioVet Staff

Ringworm is not actually a worm, it is a fungi. Therefore routine wormers will not cover this.
All ringworm treatments for cats are prescription only so you should discuss the condition further with your vet.

Does it sting?

Penny

A few days ago I wormed my rescue cat for the first time using Dronspot Spot-on solution. I thought this might be the least stressful way of de-worming him as he is a very nervous cat and it has taken me a long time to gain his trust. He sat with his back to me and allowed me to part his fur at the base of his skull, no problem. However, as soon as I administered the liquid, he made a bolt for the door! He seems ok now, but, for a couple of days afterwards, he wouldn't allow me to touch his head and seemed very wary. Does the solution sting or did I just take him by surprise?

  • VioVet Staff

This solution does not sting but it will feel like liquid on your cat's neck until it dries. Most cats dislike the sensation of liquid on their coats/skin and so this likely explains the reaction you saw.

Which size?

Jan

My cat weighs 5kg. Which size of Drontal wormer should I use?

  • VioVet Staff

If your cat is exactly 5kg then you will need to use the Dronspot Spot On Medium Wormer according to the datasheet. If your cat is 5.01kg or above then you should use the Large version instead.

Use with Seresto collar

Cristina

Hello

Can I use this spot on solution if my cat has Seresto collar on at the same time?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes, these two medications can be used together safely. It is advised to apply the spot on in a different area than the collar, such as towards the top of the head.

Does my cat need worm treatment?

June

My cat is female, approx. 12 years old. I've seen no sign of worms but she is driving me mad crazing for food - she doesn't give up and I find myself giving in for some
peace. She gets through 5 sachets of Felix a day and she probably could eat more.
She is not getting fat but also she isn't thin. She's a small build cat with small paws and head. We've had her since she was 4 years old and it took a long while to gain her trust, she's nervous and doesn't go outside for long. Trying to give her oral medication is really difficult. Thanks.

  • VioVet Staff

It is recommended to worm routinely every 3 months for the average outdoor cat. This is because they will likely ingest worms eggs from hunting or scavenging outside. A wormer like Dronspot is great because it covers roundworms and tapeworms.

Increased appetite can be a sign of a high worm burden but you would likely see some worms occasionally in the faeces when they naturally die if this was the cause. I would advise worming anyway to rule this out though.
There can be more serious underlying causes to an increase in appetite in cats so I strongly advise you contact your vet to rule these out as well. In particular Hyperthyroidism can appear as the signs you are seeing, this requires veterinary treatment.

When to apply treatment

Lionel Martin

  • VioVet customer since 2009
  • From: Worcestershire, United Kingdom

Should this treatment be done at a different time to a spot on flea treatment, say a week apart?

  • VioVet Staff

This depends on the spot on flea treatment you are using. If your other spot on does not cover worms at all and does not share any of the same active ingredients, then they can safely be used together. However you may find this is a lot of liquid on your cat's neck all at once in which case you could apply a few days, or even 1 week, apart if this is easier.

How long to wait between medications

westcot

I have used drontal spot on on my cat. How long should I wait before administering frontline?

  • VioVet Staff

Frontline and Drontal have completely different ingredients and they will not interact, you can use them both at the same time. You may find there is not enough room on the back of your cat's neck to to apply both at the same time, if this is the case then I advise doing the products around 1 week apart.

Frequency of application

Holly

How often should I apply Dronspot to my CAT?

  • VioVet Staff

For most cats treatment once every 3 months is sufficient. Though it can be applied up to once a month if your cat is a known hunter.
