Puppy

Composition

Cereals, meat and animal derivatives (minimum 22% chicken), oils and fats (minimum 1.25% fish oil), vegetable derivatives, minerals, seeds.

Directions For Use

At weaning, Dr. John Puppy can be introduced gradually as a porridge (leave one part Dr. John Puppy and three parts warm water to soak before blending to a porridge consistency). Offer small amounts 4-6 times per day for periods of 15-20 minutes. If the puppies empty the bowl, increase the feed by a small amount until weaning is complete. Post weaning or for new puppy owners, follow the daily feeding guide below (showing the total amount to feed each day in 3-4 meals), either dry or moistened with water. Then move gradually onto a junior food at half adult size (we recommend Dr. John Titanium). If changing your puppy’s diet to Dr. John Puppy, introduce it gradually over a few days until it replaces all other growth food. When bringing your puppy home for the first time, allow him/her to adjust to the home environment for at least a week before changing the diet. Always ensure that there is plenty of clean, fresh water available for your puppy to drink. When this pack is not in use, fold down top and store in a cool dry place.

55 dry dog food outside the normal high street pet shop widely stocked brands
Verified Purchase

Very active Golden retriever (over 2yrs) always been fed on this brand without any negative issues. Shiny coat, loads of energy - happy dog.
Puppy variety makes excellent training treats.
If you don't want to spend a fortune for a better known high street brand then this is a good choice. When deciding if to continue with product used by breeder, comparison research of the ingredients list against that of supposedly "better!" known brands did not indicate this product is in any way inferior - so why pay more.
As with any dry food to enhance the flavour, why not add a touch of warm water & by adding afew peas, carrots...etc - whatever your dog likes to increase variety.

Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Dr John Dog Food, including answers from our team.

Sensitive stomach

Jasmin

Anyone know what type of Dr John dog food is best for a male siberian husky with sensetive stomach?

  • VioVet Staff

The Titanum (Platinum) version would probably be best, but sensitive stomachs can be for different reasons, so you might need to talk to your vet about this if any problems persist. Make sure he has been wormed recently too.

High fibre

Charmaine

Hi I been told to change dogs diet to a high fibre as he sufferers with his anul glands. He is a very active 2 yrs old springer cross labrador Could you recommend which one to get .thank you .

  • VioVet Staff

This is quite a high fibre diet and might well suit your dog. This is the sort of thing you have to try for a while to see how it works out.

Dr John Dog Food

Sandra Temperton

Dr John dog food has been recommended to me by a friend of a friend whose dog is the same breed as mine with the same health problems. Is it possible to purchase a smaller bag or sample as my dog is rather a fussy eater and so I don't want to purchase a 15th bag in case she doesn't like it.

  • VioVet Staff

Unfortunately we do not have any sizes available other than those listed on the website. This is always a difficulty for online companies. You might be best to go to a high street store for small samples as then they do not have to cover postage either. (I am tempted to add that Dr John is a perfectly good basic dog food, but is not normally recommended as part of a treatment for health problems. I would have to wonder if you would do better talking to your vet about this rather than a friend of a friend. Just a thought.)

Good diet or not?

Craig

I have a 7month husky I'm looking to start him on the platinum do u think it will be ok

  • VioVet Staff

This diet is a good value diet but as you would expect, not as high in quality as some of the premium diets which are a lot more expensive. There ares some diets which are much higher in protein and lower (or zero) in cereal content which I tend to prefer, but they are in a different price bracket. Many dogs do perfectly well on the Dr John diets.

Quality

Henry

As this food is so cheap compared to others, can it be any good.

  • VioVet Staff

To some extent you get what you pay for. However, some brands spend more on marketing and appearance than they do on the product itself. The margins made by the top manufacturers are probably very high too. This is a basic food which will keep most dogs without any medical issues in apparently good general health, but they are unlikely to be as robust, bright and shiny-coated as those on the top foods.
