Domosedan is a sedative given to horses. It can be used to help with clipping, dental rasping and other minor procedures in animals which are otherwise uncooperative. The dose must be calculated carefully and an accurate estimate of the horse's weight is needed for this. The advice of the prescribing veterinary surgeon should be followed at all times.

Fab product if administered correctly. If you don't get it under the tongue completely expect a half doped sharp horse and proceed with care! My mare fights sedation especially with a vet present so this helps me clip her. I still can't touch her legs but it takes the edge off. Takes around 40 mins to have effect and lasts roughly and hour.

I used this to sedate my pony so he could be clipped. It was a step down from the usual IV sedation that I get done. I got it from prescription from my vet.
With this gel it is VERY important to get it under the tongue as it doesn't work if used anwhere else. It needs to be absorbed into the mucus membranes under the tongue. If any is swallowed, it won't work.
Also it only works if the horse is kept calm and quiet so best to do it when they are quite chilled out. I took him in a quiet stable and had him relaxed before I did anything.
My vet wrote on the packet how much to give and I put latex gloves on to ensure I got none on my skin.
I struggled to get it under his tongue a bit due to him being wriggly but managed ok then stood him on his bed and waited for it to work. I had him on a headcollar and if he walked away, I brought him back and had him stand still again. At first I thought it wasn't working but within 30 minutes it started to take effect and within 35 minutes, he was under.
It worked beautifully, we managed a full clip and he was fine BUT was very heavily under. In hindsight, I should have given a little less as it is really really strong stuff. He was so under that 4hrs later, he was still haf asleep and I phoned the vet to check this was ok!
I eventually managed to bring him round by tapping him gently on the muzzle to alert him a bit and when he had come round a little, took him for a walk around the yard as the fresh air brought him round more. When he had been out of it for an hour, I gave him some water and small bits of hay whilst watching carefully to make sure he didn't choke.
Side effects he got included - frequent urination, muscle tremors and shivering, moans and groans, sweating.
Do not feed beforehand as it can affect sedation with it being an oral gel and also do not give water or food whilst under sedation.
All in all, this is a fab sedation that is easily administered at home but **be aware** it is extremely strong. It put my pony under very deeply and was quite a struggle to bring round. Use carefully and get a vet's advice on dosage. Even a little too much can have strong effects.

Brilliant !! that all i can say..i have a cob 16.1 very leg ticklish... could not get hair clipped off without this it is even better than the injection...my horse is about 550 600 kg,s (heavy weight cob) gave full syring took 40 mins to work and boy did it work...out cold for 3 hours ...as the hair is off for future trims i will give half the amount it is very strong ...always wear gloves .... not cheap but well worth it ... :) to be put under tongue my horse was easy...not all are

I use Domosedan on my 12 year old Paso Fino who is extremely anxious with the farrier. He also has a very high tolerance for sedatives.
Domosedan Gel works very well for him. The sedative takes some time (on my boy, 14.2h, 500kg, it takes up to 45 mins to kick in) so make sure you allow for this when you administer it.
Also be aware that you MUST use medical gloves, and that the sedative has to be put under the tongue to be effective. It is absorbed through the mucus membrane, so should you get any of it on your skin...wash it off immediately.
The gel does not come with gloves.
I do recommend it, but you must read the instructions carefully and be sure what you need to do beforehand.
I can take up to 2 1/2 hours after it kicks in before the horse is fully awake and can be left alone. Factor this in when you use it.
If you have a horse who is finnicky with having anything administered via a tube -- I have a trick for you.
Save an old worming tube and wash it out. Get some apple sauce. Now every other day, put some apple sauce in the wormer tube and administer it the same way you would wormer, or a sedative.
Pretty soon your horse will associate the tube with something nice - and you shouldn't have much trouble with administering anything else. (I deliberately wear gloves when I do it with mine, as last time he saw the gloves and went "ugh, no".)

I use this drug for my 14hh pony for foot trimming and have done for years are there any long term side effects. Also can she eat beforehand or is it better on an empty stomach.
The datasheet for this medication states the following regarding possible side effects:
In studies with the product, the following adverse reactions have also been observed: transient erythema at the dose application site, piloerection, oedema of the tongue, hypersalivation, increased urination, flatulence, epiphora, allergic oedema, muscle tremors, and pale mucous membranes.
It is not clear whether these are long term implications, however it is likely these are only short term risks for when the medication is active in the system. There are no listed specifically long term side effects for this medication on the datasheet itself.
Regarding useage the datasheet states the following:
Unlike most other oral veterinary products, this product is not meant to be swallowed. Instead, it must be placed under the tongue of the horse. When the product is administered, the animal should be allowed to rest in a quiet place. Before any procedure is initiated, sedation should be allowed to fully develop (approximately 30 - 40 min).
Food and water should be withheld until the sedative effect of the product has worn off.
This is a prescription only medication so you should run these questions past your prescribing vet.

Hi , I have a very sharp 4yr old warmblood. Just started to compete him and he's absolutely nuts! He rears, tanks and in generally really uncooperative. At home he is fine, he was cut late and I think it all blows his head off. I don't feel that normal calmers will work. I have a competition in 1 week and need help, thank you
This is such a difficult one because different horses seem to respond to different products and it is quite unpredictable. Zylkene works well for some and it can be given along with any of the herbal calmers if needed. I would try that, but it is inevitably a bit of trial and error, plus thoughtful and skillful schooling. Best of luck!
