Q & A

Below are some recent questions we've received regarding Dodson & Horrell Milk Thistle for Horses, including answers from our team.

Detox

Olivia Holmes

Can this be used short term as a liver detox

  • VioVet Staff

It is perfectly acceptable to give this for a limited period of time and it might help to help the liver to recover from any issues affecting it at the moment. There is quite a lot of scientific research which suggests that Milk Thistle (or extracted silymarin) can help with a variety of liver conditions.

Will this have any contraindications for my rabbit given with metacam or depocillin injectable penicillin ?

  • VioVet Staff

Small amounts of this should be perfectly OK for your rabbit, but feeding large quantities is stepping into the unknown (although it probably would be fine). The penicillin can cause trouble sometimes even if given by injection and the Metacam is usually safe, but that too can cause trouble on occasions (especially for dehydrated individuals). Nothing which is genuinely effective will always be completely safe, that is just how things are. Your own vet should be able to advise you on all of this, taking into account your own individual rabbit.

How pure is the product?

I am currently comparing your product to Equimins and was wondering why your dosage is a lot more?

  • VioVet Staff

We are a retailer and not the manufacturer. We have to follow the guidelines produced by the manufacturers. Feeding guidelines and quantities are based on the experience and knowledge of each manufacturer. Sometimes there are differences in the way they collect, sort and process the herbal ingredients, as well as differing views on the best amount to give for optimal effect. These are not licensed medicines and so thorough scientific evaluation and testing will not be the same as a licensed, pharmaceutical product. You can of course contact Dodson and Horrell directly. I would say that it is difficult to compare different products when they are not licensed because they are not standardised. I would just advise that you follow the advice of the manufacturer of the product you are using.
