Not sure why but my horse hated this so it must have been itchy or hurt her in some way. I diluted it according to the directions so it wasn't too strong.

Rain or sweat?

It says a minumum application of 2 weeeks, but what if the horse is heavily rained on, or washed off after sweating?

  • VioVet Staff

As long as the solution is allowed to completely dry after application then this is not an issue, it is absorbed into the skin. It is therefore recommended to allow a few hours drying time after application before exercise or washing, up to 24 hours if possible however in hot weather drying time will be shorter.

Use on stables and rugs?

Is this suitable for spraying stables etc to get rid of lice where the ponies have rubbed themselves?

  • VioVet Staff

This medication is licensed for use directly on horses only, it is not licensed for environmental use and so it is unknown how effectively it will work used in this way. it is recommended to use a stable lice product such as Farnam Tri-Tech 14 instead for environmental treatment.

does it help with ticks?

  • VioVet Staff

This medication is not licensed for the control of ticks, it is only licensed to cover fleas and lice. It may have an effect on ticks however as it is not licensed to do so then it is recommended to use a tick specific product instead. Feather lice

jane webb

I have just got a Belgian Draught with a bad infestation of feather mites. It looks to have gone untreated for a long time as he has rubbed his legs raw with the itching. Is it safe to apply to very raw skin ?
And is there anything additional I can do to help him and speed up his recovery ?
Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

Deosect is intended for aiding the control of fleas/lice, it is not indicated for or completely effective against feather mites. I recommend discussing treating the condition with your vet, most commonly off license medications are prescribed like Frontline Spray. These can be purchased from our site but only alongside a written prescription from your vet.

Deosect and rain/sweat/washing

Zoe Fry

  • VioVet customer since 2018
  • From: Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

Is deosect washed off by sweating or washing the horse?

  • VioVet Staff

The product should be allowed to dry completely before any washing or exercise that causes sweating. This is usually easiest done in the evening for overnight drying, or after your horse has been washed and dried.

Do you need to submit a vet prescription to buy this for a horse.

  • VioVet Staff

Deosect is a POM-VPS licensed product so you do not need a vet prescription to order it for your horse. We will need some detials about your pet to dispense it to you though, our checkout process will take you through this.
