Garlic?

The allium family including onions and garlic is known to be highly toxic to cats and dogs, causing heinz body anaemia in cats. Please could you tell me why you sell this food containing garlic?

John Cousins
  • Veterinary Surgeon

These plants are toxic if consumed in large quantities, but a dog or cat would have to eat a large meal consisting mostly of onions for it to experience any difficulties. Smaller amounts are very widely used as supplements and are potentially very beneficial for dogs and cats. They certainly are not "highly toxic". As a point to note, I would draw the analogy with paracetamol in people. This is regarded as one of the safest pharmacological drugs known, yet it has caused more human deaths than any other drug. At the recommended dose it is immensely safe and will not cause you or me any trouble how ever often we use it. However if we get the dose wrong and consume 20 times the recommended dose, we will probably die. Simple as that. The amount of garlic needed to be dangerous to a dog or cat is so much greater than the usual dose in a supplement it bears no relation to what normally happens. Indeed it has been found that labortory rats are prone to cancer if forced to swallow huge amounts of water. That does not mean that water is dangeroud for rats. It is all down to the dose, so you need not worry at all about Alliums used as supplements. As recommended, they are helpful, not dangerous.
