Would milk thistle help spaniels allergies?

Margaret

Hi

My 11yr old Sprocker Spaniel has seasonal and other general allergies. Would Milk Thistle help with these? If so is there a specific amount of time it can be given or can he have it every day, all year round?

Many thanks

  • VioVet Staff

Milk thistle is not specifically indicated for allergies, it is more commonly recommended for supporting the liver. I recommend reading our blog for more information on supporting allergies, link provided here.

What's the difference between Blooming Pets Milk Thistle Liquid and HepatiNorm Liver Support?

graham smith

Our 12 year old cat has an inflamed liver with high liver enzyme values. The vet thinks this is partially due to prednisolone which is being used to stimulate his appetite and is now working. The vet is now prescribing milk thistle tablets - but given the number of other medications in tablet form he is currently taking we thought a liquid might be better to administer - but the vet can't get the medication in this form. What's the difference in formulation/active ingredients between these two milk thistle products on your website - as there is a significant difference in price and volume between the two?

Also, our cat has lost a significant amount of weight and now weighs just 2.5kg - so what dose would be recommended for a cat of his size?

  • VioVet Staff

The Bloomings Milk Thistle version just contains Milk Thistle whilst our own brand HepatiNorm contains this and a few other ingredients, listed below:
Lecithin 50mg
Pantothenic Acid (Calcium Pantothenate) 10mg
Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine) 5mg
Vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin) 5mg
Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine) 5mg
Alpha Lipoic Acid 5mg
Vitamin B-12 (Cyanocobalamin) 10mcg

Your cat will need 2ml twice daily of the HepatiNorm liquid.

Milk thistle liquid for birds

Rachel

Hi, I have been advised to get some milk thistle for my cockatiel is this one ok to use for birds? Please

  • VioVet Staff

I have contacted Blooming Pets, who manufacture this product, and they advise it is safe to use in birds such as cockatiels. They cannot advise on a doseage though so I recommend discussing this with your local vet.

Dosage for 30kg dog

Ellen Milne

Hello, I wondered if you might be able to advise how much to give daily to a dog weighing 30kgs?
And would it be given in one dose or split in to two?
Many thanks for your help.

  • VioVet Staff

Your dog would need 7.5mls daily as one dose (around 1.5 teaspoons).

Will this help my terrier

Annie

My cairn cross westie has high liver levels, he's also had a stent put in his tummy, he suffers from pancreatitis as well. I've got him on Denamarin and lots of vet antibiotics, but I feel the Denamarin is making his tired, loss of appetite, and nausea, sometimes diarrhoea. Will just milk thistle help his liver levels instead of Denamarin.

  • VioVet Staff

Milk thistle will certainly still be helpful to his liver but Denamarin contains more quality ingredients so I would stick with that if you can given your dogs history. I would also be surprised if it is the Denamarin causing these symptoms, it is not something we usually see with this supplement. It is more likely to be one of the antibiotics he is on. It may just be worth having a chat with your vet before you change anything.

Dosage for cat

Nicola

Hi my cat has very mild fattty liver disease and been advised to give him liver supplement with milk thistle. I have tried the sachets and palatable tablets that have salymin and silybin in and he won't have it, so think the liquid may be worth trying even though it's only the one ingredient.
He is 4.6kg, how much should I give him? I have a plastic syringe so I can administer it in mls?
Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

Trying the liquid is a good idea. Often a liquid is more palatable than the powders. It is also better for him to get one beneficial ingredient rather than nothing at all. There is not an exact science to the dosage for this product but the manufacturers recommend that any animal up to 7.5kgs should receive half a teaspoon daily.

Dosage

Alison

I have a 46kg Rottie that the vet has advised Milk Thistle may help with his liver - he is almost 11 - what dosage would he need

  • VioVet Staff

The recommended dose for your dog would be 10mls daily which is equivalent to 2 teaspoons. This would mean one bottle would last around 25 days.

Liver Shunt

Julie Reay

  • VioVet customer since 2016
  • From: Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom

Would this be advantageous for my six month old puppy who has just had surgery to repair a Liver Shunt. The surgery was 2 weeks ago. She is on Clavabactin and Lactulose and eating Roayl Canin Hepatic dry food?

  • VioVet Staff

Milk thistle is thought to support damaged livers and so is likely to be of benefit to your puppy. It certainly won't do any harm so I would give it a go. Best of luck.
